Hydrogenated Oil!

By Illinois Girl Wednesday, January 13, 2010

I have been suffereing with migranes since I was a little girl around the year 1987, I have tried everything you can name to prevent my migranes, Diamond headache clinic, neurologists visits, medications, vitamins, cold/hot packs you name it... I am on a journey to find out how to live and eat healthy and I realized the one thing I cut from my diet, HYDROGENATED OILS!!!!!! I have not had a migrane since, I am not sure if there is a link between the two but if you have tried everything stop the medications and cut out everything that has hydrogentaed oil, partially hydrogentaed oil, and shortening, I don't use MSG either!!! Try this for about 4-5 weeks and see if it helps. It certainly helps me. I don't have to take excedrin everyday 3 times a day anymore. After 20 years of suffering, I finally have relief..

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Certain foods can be Migraine triggers for many people. Great job finding out what yours are. We do have a Migraine diary that may help make things a bit easier if you are interested. You can download that on this page: Your Migraine and Headache Diary.

People taking any kind of pain medication or Migraine abortive medications like triptans more than two days a week, may be unwittingly creating another problem called medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this. If you're in an MOH situation, nothing you take is going work, neither prescription nor "natural" medications nor over-the-counter. If that's the case, you need to work with your doctor to stop the medications causing the problem.

i'm glad to hear that you have found something that works for you, how long have you been migraine free?  what foods were you eating that you gave up?

I gave up anything tha had hydrogenated oils I have become obsessed with readin labels Laughing Cookies, snickers, mars bars, flour tortillas, imperial marine, bread products, quaker oats fiber bars. I try to eat organic foods only. Organic seasonings, don't get out to ea as much if I do I order a salad. Chinese food, mexican food etc... If it's not natural I try to avoid it. I tried eating natural at first but I was still eating products with hydrogenated oil and still getting migranes. So when I cut the oil I unconsciously noticed my headaches were non existence. I use to get them so much that I expected them to come at a certain time. I have been migrane free since November, It is not a long time but to me it feels great to go even 3 weeks without one!

i will try to start paying closer attention, going three weeks without a headache sounds like Heaven to me, i get a migraine 3-4 times a week, plus some daily headaches thrown in there.  i eat a lot of Mexican food, mostly chips and salsa. so i guess the chips will have to be elimated. do you take a preventative daily? do you take triptans to abort a migraine?

thanks again, cathie

I take excedrin, doctors wanted to put me on imitrex and about 3 other medications. I told them I refuse to take medication for the rest of my life. I have been taking excedrin for so long, if I  even feel like one is coming I take 2 pills. But I have not had one that has impaired me like in the past before I started watching my diet. The flour tortillas may have hydrogenated oil, I'm not sure about the authentic food products they have. I try to drink lots of water!

I'm no sure if this would work for everyone, I noticed that it has worked for me after trying everything else,I was so excited I wantd to share it with people I'm going to give myself at least a year to confirm that that was the problem you know go through all four season changes- here is a website that has a bit of information about PG 2 hormones andhow hydrogenated oils can affect the balance-"Many essential functions in our bodies depend on three categories of hormones called prostaglandins (PGs) which are produced from fats in our diets. The three families can be called the PG 1, PG 2, and PG 3 families. In a general sense, the PG and PG 3 families are good PGs and the PG 2 family are bad PGs. This is because in our society most of the ill effects of chronic disease are caused by or aggravated by the PG 2 family. This includes heart attacks and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory conditions including autoimmune diseases. The PG 2 family is derived directly from naturally occurring fat found in red meat, shellfish, and dairy products. PG 2 family reactions include: increasing blood clotting, (3) increasing blood pressure, (4) increasing cholesterol and causing other heart attack risk factors to be made worse. (3) PG 2 family substances increase inflammatory activity which leads to tissue destruction associated with everything from trauma to autoimmune diseases. (5, 6, 7) PG 2 family chemicals also cause a decrease in natural killer cells which are necessary for our body to fight off cancer. Because of this fact, tumors increase in size under the influence of PG 2. (8, 9) The naturally occurring PG I and PG 3 families counteract the bad effects of the PG 2 family. The PG I and PG 3 families decrease blood clotting, (10, I 1, 12) decrease blood pressure, (3, 10) decrease cholesterol, (13, 14, 15) decrease inflammation, (6, 7, 16) and increase natural killer cell activity which is necessary to fight tumors. (3, 17). Trans fats block PG I and PG 3 production, and by default, PG 2 substances are produced unopposed. The PG 2 imbalance created by the consumption of partially hydrogenated fats contributes to the production of chronic disease which is the enigma of our modern society."

no Problem, I went to a nutrionist last week, she discussed weight loss plans and how to eat smaller portions but had no knowledge about hydrogenated oil!
