What is this?!?!

By Beckie Sunday, December 16, 2007
I am 27! What in the world happened to me....... I began having muscle weakness and pin and needle sensations in my right arm and leg.  This kept coming and going. I was originally thought to have MS. Then after seeing a nuerologist and going through 10 different tests (that all came up beautiful) I went to bed the Monday after Thanksgiving with a slight headache.... the aftermath of a migrane from the day before........ I went to sleep only to awake and not be able to move anything on the right side of my body. After a week in the Nuerological ICU I came home and my whole life has changed I have physical Therapy 3 days a week. I am no longer able to drive. I lost vision and hearing on the right and I am still using a cane and am exhausted very easily.  I am not sure what to think sometimes.... I have never had a migraine until about 4 months ago.... This doesn't make sense but I am bound and determined to find out more..... because Life goes on and my life will NOT go on without me. I need any info about this..... The nueroligist is calling it Migraine Syndrome.....and that I suffered a migraine stroke...... any one with answers please!!! Thank you

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

I'm sorry you are going through all this, it sounds horrible.

The first thing that strikes me is that you need a new doctor! There is no such thing as "Migraine Syndrome." A neurologist who comes up with that doesn't know much about Migraine disease and as we like to say here his sorry butt needs to be fired. If they aren't sure what is going on yet, time to find a doctor who will figure it out.

Were you having Migraine pain in addition to your numbness? Did your pain last more than 72 hours? There is a condition called Status Migrainous that can put us at in increased risk of stroke if we have unrelented, untreatable pain for more than 72 hours. This means you haven't have at least a four-hour pain-free break while awake and the pain lasts longer than 72 hours. This needs immediate medical attention. Status Migrainous - The Basics

Having said that, I don't mean to freak you out, just give you the information. Please consider seeing a Migraine/Headache specialist to help properly diagnose you. If you are not able to see one of these specialists, do you have a University near you with a headache clinic? Most universities  have some kind of pain, headache or neurological centers where really good doctors teach. Sometimes they take patients at reduced rates too. Click HERE for our patient recommened list of Migraine specialists.

Please let me know how you are doing, ok?

Thank you for the information. The nuerologist is calling hemiplegic migraine syndrome... I have never heard of this and actually the weakness and pins and needle came before the migranes. This last attack as I will call it paralyzed me and I am still having blood pressure problems cannot walk with out assistance and I am still stuttering. I am not sure exactly what happened but all of my Cts and Mris are clear. I had a spinal tap to rule out MS and it did. But these attacks started coming with pins and needles then numbness then the migranes. The migraines could last for 24-72 hours but the weakness numbness and tingling could last up to 2 weeks then just go away. This certain attack is going on for almost a month and it was a full week before I could move the right side of my body. The nearest nuerologist is 1 hou away and the other nuerologist are about 2.5 hours from  my home and the closest university is 4. I am not sure what to do I am frieghtened and confused and I agree with you I am not sure my doctor has a clue. But he is the 3rd one I have seen and every other dr has just passed me along. If you have any other advice or options please let me know. Thank you so much
