MRI versus CT

Can someone tell me if the MRI and CT analyze the same things, or are they different?

I ask because my MD recently did an MRI to look at pituitary issues (severe migraines that wake me in the middle of the night about 12 nights per month during menses, plus a myriad of chronic endocrine diseases) and the results showed normal pituitary (the only abnormality was a maxilliary retention cyst behind the right eye).

Would a CT only be repetitive or would it discriminate different issues versus the MRI?    I am taking depakote, maxalt, frova, fioricette and halcion, but nothing helps during the early morning bouts of severe headache, nausea, (and vomitting if remain seated or laying down). THank you for any and all insights.

Not that it's tough but hard to describe. CT's and MRI's are different, but yet sort of the same. MRI's are a more "in depth" look at what a CT may not have picked up on - seeing it a lot now for breast treatments to pick up on early warning. Although CT's are now able to view in 3D imaging with additional views - it still may not see all that an MRI would.

I work for a radiology and MRI group and even I find it hard to explain the differences. Sorry if this was no help. They are different test, MRI is more in depth.

good luck!

Eileen, thanks so much for your input.  It sounds like an MRI, then, is more informative than a CT.  I appreciate your help.  Clemmie

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

What does your doctor say about the cyst? Does he think it has anything to do with your headpain? That may explain why your pain is not repsonding to medication.

On the other hand if you have Migraine disease, a genetic neurologic disorder, you may need preventive medication having that many attacks a month.

Medication Overuse Headache occurs when we take certain medications including some OTC medications more than 2-3 times during the week. If you are taking Imitrex more often than that depakote or any other preventive medication won't help your Migraine attacks.

With the endocrine issues you mentioned I would consider seeing a Migraine specialist who is an expert that treats headache disorders and Migraine disease.

Hi Nancy--

Thank you for writing and for the links.  I am taking Depakote prophylactically, and yes I am taking tons of the triptans but have also tried drug holidays (neither seems to help).  I am seeing a migraine specialist (have only seen him once and am waiting anxiously for my next appointment).  So I don't know what he thinks of the cyst, but I know my IM thought it was of no consequence.

My headaches are hormonal in that I get them beginning 24-48 hours prior to onset of menses EVERY MONTH, but they are now lasting 22-24 days of the month.  Except for the first two day where they can begin at any time of day, after that they ALWAYS wake me up early morning (2:00am-5:00am), blaring. I have had migraines since age two, and hormonal migraines since age 14, but the past few months this "waking severe" headache is new.

I dont' know if I have hormonal-related intracranial swelling or edema that might be causing the cyclic excruciating pain, but was just trying to find out if the MRI could MISS something that a CT would identify, as I am planning for my next office visit with the specialist.  I also don't know if menstrual-related intracranial swelling and/or edema is a known entity, or might be treatable in some other way.

THanks again, Clemmie
