I had migraine headaches as a child. I don't remember them occurring frequently, but I do recall how painful they were.
I seemed to grow out of them in my teenage years. Then in my early twenties they returned with a vengence. I started treating them myself with over the counter medications and ended up with rebound headaches.
About 15 years ago I started seeking medical attention. About 10 years ago I really got aggressive in my search for a treatment that would work without making me sicker. That is when the daily headaches started.
I managed to get through work for about 5 years. I persevered, took a lot of medications and started seeing a neurologist who specializes in head pain. Then I just couldn't do it anymore, balance all of the balls in the air. Manage my career, my marriage, a home, and friendships. I started missing work, I lost a lot of my friends, and fell into a rather deep depression.
After working on and off for 3 years, I stopped working completely nearly 2 years ago. I got even more aggressive in my search for a treatment and caught up on the sleep I had missed over the last 10 years.
So here I am today, technically "disabled", diagnosed with chronic daily resistant migraine headaces. This just means I have a headache everyday and the doctors don't know what to do about it. I hope to overcome the label "disabled" and return to the workforce one day. I might even have kids. I have a wonderful husband who has stuck by me even though life can really suck at times. Don't get me wrong, we have our bad days - usually on my bad days:). We're learning to be angry at the migraine headaches instead of each other. And I'm learning I can do some things even when I have a migraine.
