Long story short

By Justified Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Growing up I witnessed my mother suffer from dibilitating migraines, up to four days locked in a room, every month.  My knowledge of Migraines was based on what she went through.  As I got older I began to experience those associated with menstruation.  Once I went to the hospital.  Then they came out with the Triptans, but with all the warnings I was too scared to take it.  Pregnancies caused increased tension headaches in the first 4 months, daily.  It wasnt until a major trauma in my family, my migraines transformed into chronic migraines and I was forced into taking Imitrex. Boy what a lifesaver!  I had unusual symptoms like jaw and face pain and tingling, double vision, along with the traditional temple throb.  But when I took the Imitrex, it cleared up!  So now I know a migraine is coming with my auras, jaw pain and double vision in one or both eyes, usually one side is worse.  My doctor has also put me on propranalol, which is a HBP medication also used to prevent migraines.  Recently a Doctor here in Hawaii started a clinical study where he has sufferers used cold packs on the FRONT of their neck nearest to the arteries going to the brain.  That spurred a question in my mind about my jaw pain.  So while at work my boss (a dentist) brought out an anatomy book.  The carotid artery travels up the neck, just past the Jaw joint then branches off into the front of the face and up into the temple, all where i feel my auras start!  Slowly I am learning my triggers, like crying, heat and a few others.  So ya, thats my story!

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

Thanks for sharing your story with us. Trigger identification and management is a vital component of managing Migraine disease. One of the best tools for identifying triggers is a good Migraine diary. You can download a free diary workbook from our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary. Some of us have food triggers; some of us don't. It's advisable to determine if your daughter does, and an elimination diet is the best way to do that. For more information and a workbook on this, see Managing Migraine - Migraine Trigger Foods.

The inflammation of the trigeminal nerve can have a lot to do with our Migraine attacks. For an interesting graphic of a Migraine attack, take a look at Pathways of  a Migraine.

I hope this helps and we hope to hear more from you,

Nancy
