Ranbaxy to Sell Copycat Migraine Med By Thomas Gaudio 1/21/2008
Generic drug maker Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited said today that it has settled the issues surrounding its possible patent litigation with GlaxoSmithKline related to Imitrex, the British drug maker's medicine for migraine headaches.The settlement provides that India-based Ranbaxy, which has its U.S. headquarters in Princeton, may distribute sumatriptan succinate tablets, a generic version of Imitrex tablets, in three dosages in the United States. The expected launch date is December. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Annual sales for Imitrex are $985 million, according to statistics cited by Ranbaxy. Imitrex is also sold as a nasal spray and an injection.

I hear you about the cost of triptans. I almost hit the floor when I picked up my 6 Relpax, that didn't work, for my forty dollar co-pay. WHAT! I had been using Axert (which works WONDERS for me,) samples from the doctor that him seemed to never have in, so we tried Relpax. Too expensive and it didn't work as well.

Hello and welcome! It would be great to see a generic form of Maxalt that soon, and I hope your source is correct.
However, according to the FDA, the earliest a generic form would be available is 2012. Mylan pharmaceuticals has a tentative approval for generic Maxalt, but those are often granted several years before the generics can be marketed.
Imitrex tablets should be the first tablet form generic triptan, and should be available next year. Nine companies have tentative approval of generic sumatriptan (Imitrex). The first of those tentative approvals was granted in 2005.
Not trying to be negative, but thought I'd share the info I have.
On the subject of the Maxalt not always working -- have you tried all the other triptans? If not, it would be worth talking with your doctor about trying them.
