Trigger Point Injections

  • On Thursday, I had the second of three rounds of Trigger Point Injections. The first round left me with a migraine as well as feeling like I had been bee stung about 30 times Sad . This second round has been much better, with immediate relief from the anesthesia and a much lower level headache even today. Has anyone else had much experience with these?  I am very hopeful to break this headache I've had since the week before Thanksgiving, but I don't want to have unrealist expectations.  Let me know! Unsure

    Thanks!

I will have to tell you more in April.  I am getting injections in my TMJ and my occipital nerve area.  I know my trigger points are a mess as well... they are always ouchy and rope like and headaches make them 3 billion times worse.  You will have to tell us how it goes.

    Hi Melissa,

I am a chronic migraine with aura sufferer.  I use occipital nerve blocks and trigger point injections every 8 weeks as part of my treatment regimen.  The injections have been a godsend for me!  I have between 1 and 2 pain-free weeks after the injections!  (Without them, I have daily migraine pain and VERY frequent nausea...

    Hi Melissa,

Yes, the injections are painful.  Some people say they ice the areas the night of the injections.  I prefer to use heat--somehow a heating pad is more soothing to me than the ice.  My pain is relieved as soon as the injection is finished, and the steroid holds the pain away for many days!

I've found that it is REALLY important to find a doctor with a lot of headache/migraine experience to do the injections.  I received them from a relatively inexperienced specialist for a while--I had absolutely NO help from them then.  Now, however, I see a wonderful headache specialist who really knows his stuff!  His injections are FANTASTIC!  (Hmmm...I never thought I'd write those words together!!)

If you have a moment, come over and visit us at the discussion forum--it's a good place to find a lot of back-and-forth discussion about issues like trigger point injections.  It's also a terrific place to find support and information!  To get to the discussion forum, just look at the top of this page.  Click on the orange "Manage" bar.  Then, click on "Migraine forums."  That'll take you right there!  You'll have to sign in there all over again, but you can use the same info you used here, if you like.  We've had many good discussions about trigger point injections and occipital nerve blocks there!

I hope to see you at the discussion forum!

Hello jennyc, and thanks for your comment.  I have a question for you about the injections.  Did it work for you the first time, or did it take a couple of sessions for the pain to subside?  The reason I'm asking is because I'm scheduled for a series of 3 injections, spaced 2 weeks apart.  I've had the first 2, with the second...

I've had the first 2, with the second one giving significantly more relief than the first, which makes me REALLY hopeful about the third one!

I hope you're having a good day, and I look forward to hearing back from you.

      Thanks!
