Topamax/doctor problem

By LH2 Saturday, November 24, 2007

Not sure how everyone feels about Topamax, but I've been on it for about 4 weeks and I've been sick for 3.  My stomach is churning all the time and I can't eat very well at all.  I'm 5'6", 137 lbs.  I know, everyone can stand to lose a few pounds and I'm fine with that.  I just don't want to feel this way all the time.  Does anyone have any ideas?  My doctor said through her nurse that this medicine doesn't make you sick and pretty much hung up on me.  Oh, and most importantly, hasn't done ANYTHING for my migraines!!!!!!

Any help?  Thank you!

to hear you are not feeling well. Some medications can take up to 3 months to become beneficial to us.  I know that seems like a long time, but hopefully if your Migraine frequency is reduced then it would be worth it.

Topamax-(please click HERE for important information on topamax) is a very powerful medication that can have some potentially serious side effects. The dose needs to be increased very slowly, and split twice a day for maximum benefit. If your Migraines are not better, and you feel this is not the right medication for you, don't worry. There are over 100 medications that can be used to treat Migraine disease. Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

Now on to that doctor. If he is not willing to work with you, it may be time for a new one. He needs to listen to your concerns and not blow them off by just saying this drug won't make you sick. That is just nonsense..... To see if this doctor is right for you we have a quiz you may find interesting. Click HERE to start it.

If you'd like to see a Migraine specialist, and we always suggest that as the best option, we have a Patient Recommended Directory located HERE.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing.

and I hope that it does not do the same to me... I was just Today given samples of Topamax to try and am so dreading what might happen and I'm not thrilled with the side affects. you definitely need to find a new doctor, one that will listen to you. I left my PCP after a year and a half last week for saying he'd done all that he can do when I have had the same headache for 2 weeks at that point, and really just wanted some temporary relief until I went to the neurologist today. I saw my new PCP yesterday and he was already talking about working WITH my neuro! try to eat crackers, bread, anything, that might calm your stomach. and good luck! Big Smile

I just started Topamax too.  I have been on it two weeks.  My stomach hurt too when I started, (not hungry, churning, etc...) but it has gotten better toward the end of this week.  Maybe you're going to get better too as your body adjusts to the medicine?   I hope so. I had a lot of problems with tiredness and forgetfulness.  I didn't feel like myself...it was almost like an out of body experience, but it has really gotten better toward the end of this last week.

Good luck and keep in touch!

I'm sorry your not feeling well. It can take several months for your body to adjust. and the med . to work/ I've been on topamax for over 5 yrs.in the begining I had the same problems. no desire to eat, I was lucky my symptoms wore off.& the med. began to work. This is something very personal to you & you have to weigh the pros & the cons of take this

Hope everything works out good luck!

i also am trying out topomax and i am on week 4 as well. it is going to take 6 weeks for any results, ( i have had numerous migraines praying that it will kick in on week 6 ) i was having some odd side effects so i began taking it before bed and that seemed to eliminate the groggy feeling, maybe that will help with your stomach problems.

for everyone that it worked for... how long did it take to work? and for the women did you get several migraines during your cycle? or several migraines a month? i am experiencing up to 7 a month currently and i am at my wits end. 2 more weeks and i will be on topomax for 6 weeks, but i don't know what i will do if it doesn't work.

thank you.
