Dear Migraine friends,

some of you knew that I was going to Dallas as an extreme measure to bring hopefully a break to my intracable period of migraines.  I just want to comment that their professionalism, Dr. Krusz's surprisingly hands on treatment (it's under his direction every step of the way), and willingness to push me to what I could handle while at the same time being supportive was a good atmosphere for change.  Because my migraines are so awful , we got right down to treatment, using simple things from Mag. sulphate to the much stronger Ketamine infusions. Dr. Krusz along with his assistant Diane, changed up and beefed up some of my meds while dropping others.  I am going way up on lamictal and they added a drug called seroquel which in my case is a sleep aid since I did not respond to zanaflex and other drugs. The seroquel is helping sleep which Dr. Krusz emphasized will help my migraines as my sleep paterns were awful.  I'm not going to sugarcoat my experience, the infusions could be difficult to go through, and I arrived in the clinic in a lot of pain with levels at 9 and above.  Everyone there including the wonderful nurse Jane were all working to bring those levels down. My case was complicated with many different factors that made my treatment indeed unique, sometimes a little scary and never boring or routine. So we move on to the second phase to add to the slight inroads they were able to make with the medication changes and infusions. Anyone in bad shape and considering a trip to Dallas I highly encourage it. It may not be easy, but the whole team is working for your improvement.

Now that I am home I haven't been headache free especially with a freak weather disturbance this afternoon, but the headaches have seemed less intense and easier to abort and finally, a couple of days ago, I had 16 pain free hours, the most in years. I now that says hours - but for me that's a lot.

So my experience will not be yours, if Dallas is in your future or you are considering it, know that you will get the best and innovative care that you can probably receive in the states.  Go with an open mind.

I went alone and stayed in a hotel.  Going with a loved one or partner or even a friend, might make it a little easier.  I was pretty exhausted every evening and maybe someone to help dig up some food and just a holding  hand might be nice.

If I can answer any questions, of a non-medical sort about the experience - non medical as in I make no recommendations as to what treatments should or may be used on you, but can only share my experience, please don't hesitate to write.

   All the best -

Ian from Migraineville AZ.

I am glad to hear you had a good experience with Dr. Krusz. It sounds like the visit was a success.

Having your Migraine attacks be more managable is very important. To be able to abort the attack and reduce the pain is key as you found out.

I wish you contiuned good luck

Dear Nancy - so good to hear from you! It's all grist for the mill right now. I feel like everything is in a state of flux right now - changing - at least for the better. I need to get well enough to get back to work. The tofu and potatoes have got to get on the table somehow LOL. Last night I got four unbroken hours of sleep - that's big for me -and correspondingly - I feel better this morning. Enuf about me. How are you?

I was taking a "me" minute at school to check the email and stuff, and came across your post. I almost started crying in the middle of sixth period, in front of all the kids, because I was so happy for your pain-free hours.  I know you've worked harder for those hours than just about anybody works for anything.  Just to hear you talk about having a renewed sense of hope makes my day.  I couldn't be any happier for you.

thanks for your comments!  My raised lamictal is really helping the auras today - and today is the first day - so I am keeping my sense of hope. Take care -

Hi there We have never spoken before, but theres a first time for everything. Your migraines sound severe. I am an extreme case too, and though I have broken the 16 hours migraine free periods, I do still manage to get them almost every day. I would give anything I own to be able to get the care you were able to receive. I am in Ontario, and the health system is majorly lacking. I consider it a good neuro visit if he only looks at his watch 5 times during the meeting! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and truly hope your on your way to a less painful existence. Hugs to you my friend bimini *mrscolt*

Dear Mrscolt:

I'm probably going to be in Alberta late summer - for a month or two. Thanks for telling me about that. I'm sorry this neuro finds his watch more fascinating than helping patients  - that is just so rude. Perhaps you could make one visit to a neuro in the states. Might be an idea.  I took a big risk - financial and migraine wise to go to Dallas. sometimes risks pay off. Just a thought.

Hope things work out a little better

Hugs

(We had a dust storm yesterday - blew my headache progress - hoping it is just a bump in the road)
