New to the neighborhood

By pljohns Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Hi all-

I recently found this site and am so glad I did!  I began having migraines about 6 months ago.  Not too bad at first-only 1-2 a month.  They have since increased to 2-3/month.  I was on Frova with advil as an abortive, but that seemed to quit working.  It always took a shot of toradol to finish off the headache.  Last week my MD changed me to Cymbalta-MAJOR MISTAKE.  Talk about SICK!!!  Needless to say, I'm back in to see him today to discuss other alternatives for abortives.  After reading A LOT over the weekend, I just don't agree that I'm bad enough for prevenatives yet-specially since we haven't tried any other abortives.  I work for my MD, so hopefully he'll work with me!

I also suffer from a pituitary tumor that has been fine for several years.  High prolactin can trigger migraines so I'm off to have an MRI this Friday to make sure it's doing OK.  All of the labs say the levels are fine and I have no other symptoms of it being out of wack so I think it's just a follow up MRI.

I've been searching everywhere trying to find if anyone's MD allows them to keep toradol injections at home.  That seems to be the last kicker in totally getting rid of my migraines.  I'm going to talk to my Md about it today and see if he would consider that possibility.  Sometimes it just isn't possible to be at work when a migraine hits for him to give me a shot.

I look forward to being a part of the community and thanks for any help you can give me!

Lynn

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

There are six other triptans to try which may be helpful: Imitrex, Amerge, Maxalt, Axert, Relpax, and Zomig. I'd given up on triptans after trying quite a few without any benefits. But recently I've tried Axert and found my Migraine was aborted quickly, a pleasant surprise!

Have you been able to identify any Migraine triggers? We have a Migraine diary you can download HERE that may help. Many people find chocolate, red wine, and MSG will trigger a Migraine attack. For a list click HERE. For others lights, weather changes and hormones trigger their Migraines. Certainly pituitary problems can impact Migraines.

Toradol, a pain reliever, is a rescue medication used if and when a Migraine abortive fails or cannot be used.  The first line of defense in Migraine management is to use preventive medication to reduce the number and severity Migraines. The next step is to abort an attack, and if that fails use our rescue medication. Preventive, Abortive, and Rescue Medications - What's the Difference? talks about these medications in detail.
