By Artsywoman1963 Tuesday, October 18, 2011

I found a great Neurologist of course, but am still suffering with them. I am now on 100 mg of Topomax and still getting them once per week sometimes twice. I just started thee 100 Topomax.  I take pain meds when they are very bad and sometimes Imitrex.

Nice to see you posting again. Congratulations on your move. Way back in 2009 you mentioned you were going to see a MS doctor. How did you make out at that visit?

I'm curious if you started Topamax at 100mg? This medication is most beneficial when started at a lose dose, 25 mg, and titrated up slowly. This is what the Migraine specialists we work with report. In fact we have some very good information on Topamax in the Topamax Profile you may want to take a look at.

Are you taking something everyday to relieve these headaches? Taking Migraine abortive meds such as the triptans or ergotamines or any kind of pain medication -- prescription or over-the-counter -- more than two or three days a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

ANY use of opioids or barbiturates and frequent use of triptans and NSIADs are associated with increased risk of transformed Migraine. See Transformed Migraine - Risk Increased by Some Medications.

I hope this information helps,

Nancy

Thanks.  I am sorry, I did start at a lower dose and have had the Topomax increased to 100 mg.  I also know about the rebound headaches and they are awful, so I try not to use the Fiorcet, which to me is the worst rebound headache meds, even worse than tylenol 3. I cannot take the triptans due to my heart condition and side effects.  I take the over the counter stuff too.  I used to take Midrin, which helped so much more. I wish it was back on the market!  It was really the only thing that helped my headaches!

HI, I am on Topamax too. My Doc just increased mine 100mg at time.  I still have a migraine about 12hrs aday everyday and I am also on Relpax 40mg.  Are these ok together?

Good luck, I hope you get rid of your migraine!!! Enjoy Florida!

Hi Patti,

When I looked up to see if there were any interactions with these to drugs, I didn't find any significant known interactions between these two medications, BUT you need to ask your doctor this question. There are factors to be considered in addition to possible interactions between these two medications -- any health issues/conditions you may have, and ALL other medications you are taking including prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, etc.

How long have you been on Topamax? I give you the link so you can get some more information regarding this medications. You can read more a Topamax in our Topamax file and about Relpax too.

Happy Holidays

Nancy

Hi Patti, Thanks for writing. The topamax has began to help me, but I do get Migraines still.  I take Tramadol and Imirex.  I took Relpax and it made me have a really rapid heart rate. I do have MVP also.  I love FL so far and the weather!  Happy Holidays! Melanie

Thank you. I have been on Topamax since 2002 and Relpax only a week. The increace of topamax this week has been bad. I have had more and worse migranes.  I miss my pills twice and felt better. That tells me they are making me hurt worse. The Relpax  only last about a hour if not less. Is that normal, and that is 40 mg.. I am to the point to go off all drugs. I think they are the one reason I am hurting so bad. I would rather have more seirzures.  I had my brain taken out all ready what else can they do?

I am glad you like Florida, Good luck. Stay relaxed it helps.I was on Imirex and it gave me a rush for a hour, it scared me. It gave me the heart rush. It is funny how each pill is different on each person. It is good to share with others how you feel, so they know they are not alone!!!

God bless you!

Hi Patti,

Our notifications have been kind of messed up, so I just saw this post. I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Topamax is one medication that needs to be tapered off slowly, not stopped suddenly.

Not to worry or lose hope, there are over 100 medications that can be used to treat Migraine disease. When you get a chance take a look at this article:

Migraine and Headache Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

We do have some Migraine specialists in Florida, it may be time to seek their opinion. Look here for more information on our Patient Recommended Migraine Specialist Directory.

Glad to see another Bay area pal! After 1 year my northern allergies adjusted and became sinus headaches, which eventually became sinus migraines and now weather headaches. Also my neuro moved away and I am hanging on until my scrip runs out. It's hard to find a good doc; she was the first who Listened to me, writing notes all over the exam table paper cover.Contact me if you want to chat. Welcome and enjoy the Autumn weather!!

Hi, thanks for writing. I love the weather andf am so glad to not have to deal with the cold and snow this year!!  I do have the Migraines still due to weather changes and hormones.  I see a Neurologist at the Neuroscience Center on Central Avenue in a group practice and her name is Dr. Diaz.  She is very patient and thorough.  The practice is very organized and well run.  It is in downtown St. Petersburg.  I believe it is called Suncoast Medical Clinic.  I can look for the number and write you back.  So far, I have had to go to the ER twice due to severe migraines before I found my Dr. I was in bad shape. Luckily it was not too traumatic and the Drs were up on the treatment.  They gave me Reglan and pain meds, also a lot of the fluids i.e. magnesium sulfate which helped.  I do get extremely severe ones about every four or five months that do not respond. I am hypersensitive to many things. One of them being computer light, noise, weather, hormones, smells you name it!  What are your triggers and how long have you had Migraines?  What do you take?  I wish Midrin was back on the market, as it worked for me the best.

Yes, good old Midrin. There are many of us that feel that way. Have you tried keeping a Migraine diary? Trigger identification and management is a vital component of managing Migraine disease. One of the best tools for identifying triggers is a good Migraine diary. You can download a free diary workbook from our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary. Some of us have food triggers; some of us don't. It's advisable to determine if you do, try an elimination diet. For more information and a workbook on this, see Managing Migraine - Migraine Trigger Foods.

Take care,

Nancy
