Cymbalta-

By kayjinks Friday, December 07, 2007

My migraines seem to be escalating in frequency again and I'm not sure what to do anymore. My neurologist has changed up my medications again. For the last month I have been on 3 Cymbalta per day with no changes.

It's hard to function daily when my head feels as if it needs to be taken off and place on a shelf until it stops pounding. My life has now changed, I can no longer make plans to go out with friends or family because I don't want to cancel because of a migraine. I have let them down to many times.

Having a non-curable basilar migraine disease to me is a slow death sentence...if the headaches don't kill you the loss of your freedoms will.

I can't go outside when it's hot, raining or the humidity is high. I can't work, who wants to hire a middle aged woman who would miss days each week. Nor do they want me on their insurance. Yes, I tell them in the before hand about my migraines, it's only right. Now, people who were my friends have gone about their lives and never come around anymore. What a life!

Sorry I'm just frustrated today. It is another day with a migraine. Somewhere someone has to have come up with a surgery or medication to stop this nightmare.

sorry to hear you are suffering so.

It may be time to get another opinion from a Migraine specialist, an expert in Migraine disease and headache disorders. Neurologists may be fine doctors but treat so many different conditions it is hard for them to be experts in any one area. Click HERE for our list.

Definetly get a second opinon.  I go this month to my neuro and I am going to ask her how many migraine patients she sees (I live in a small town).  I am thinking about a specialist.  I know what you mean about dying a slow death.  I feel that we are not living if we have to deal with such distress.  I am sorry.  Take care.

before I posted.

I'm not sure if you've read this information on Basilar-Type Migraine, but this information is invaluable for someone suffering from them. Basilar-Type Migraine The Basics.

I have recentrly hired by this awesome company and been for a week now. Yesterday my migraine came back and my symptoms include everything that could possibly discribe MIGRAINE. First I get aura (vision problem) after that I can no longer function. Second, it moves to numbness of my left side of body, then goes to vomitting and then headache. It all happens at once and I can only take my pill after aura is gone, even after pill, my symptoms continue and pill makes me sleepy, where I have to ask my boss if I could use a sick room for few minutes rest. I have started my job this week monday and now I am scared that I might get fired cuz of this and I am completely out of control. Today I had the same thing. If I do not sleep for few minutes, nothing gets better. I went to the sick room and slept for two hours, even though I am using my one hour lunch break, I am really concerned that my migraine is beginning to happen very often than ever. I am so worried and I am also sad. I have no idea what to do.

I know your pain! I have been there, people really don't know the pain nor can they see it or touch it; if they seen blood they would be all over migraine sufferers.

I'm so sorry that you are suffering too...

Hi, thanks for the message, as I was searching the web, I could not find any medicine that would help aura and I was wondering if you or any of you know anything about medicines that help releaf the aura.....when this initial stage starts, no matter what I do or take, all other symptoms follow....so I think if I could ever stop the aura then I will not have other symptoms......sigh, I am so doomed.

Congratulations on your new job. This can be a very exciting time for you.

Migraine with aura occurs in 25-30 of Migraineurs. Migraine with aura - The Basics.  It is best to take an abortivie medication at the first sign of a Migraine attack. This link has great information on the difference between  Preventive, Abortive, and Rescue Medications - What's the Difference?

A Migraine Specialist is the best way to go to find the right preventive plan. We have a list a specialists click HERE to see it.

Let us know how we can help further, ok?

Hi Nancy, thank you so much for replying. Yes I was taking abortive medication already. They are Maxalt and Zomig, which are included in Teri's article (the one you had link in your reply). My doctor told me to take it the second my aura stops. The thing is, I want to stop aura, not the headache. My doctor said that these medications only work on pain. My headache starts after aura and more than anything my headache is not too bad while my aura and numbness of body (left side ) and feeling like throwing up is the worst part for me. If I can prevent aura then I should be able to take the headache.......I cannot take those medications when I have aura as my doctor recalled. I am assuming my trigger is the sleep. But not too certain about it. If there is anything that prevent my aura, then I am willing to take it, but not sure how since I do not know when it happens. As Teri wrote, there are mediacations that prevent migraine from happening but have to take it everyday.....I am not sure if I should be doing that. I am 26 years old and I do not think I can take this any longer. I rather .....anyway, my doctor might not give me that medicine...today I had 10 hour sleep and I was fine. Past few days I was taking only a few hours of sleep which I used to do very often but never had migraine cuz of it. I think it is a combination of many factors like stress and sleep, or food and environment......I am really sick of this.....I just want to cry

Hi, Taeko.  Could you check with your doctor about when to take your abortive med?  Personally, I have migraine without aura, but I know doctors sometimes tell people to take their abortive med at the start of their aura.  You should follow your own doctor's orders, since there's no way I can know all the factors he/she may be considering, but do check to make sure you understood correctly.

Have you told the doctor that stopping the aura is more important to you than stopping the headache phase of your migraine?  If not, please let him/her know that is your priority.

I do encourage you to seek out one of the migraine specialists on the list Nancy gave you a link to.  Confidence in your doctor is very important in establishing a sense of hope.

I hope you will join us on the discussion forum if you haven't already.  Click on Migraine Forums under the orange Manage bar, and register for the forum (it's a separate registration from this page.)  You sound as though you could really use the support that is given there, not to mention the information that is shared.  We would love to have you.

Take care of yourself.

Thank you for your suggestion! I am thinking about going to see my doctor again to let him know that my priority is not to avoid headache but to prevent aura. I am not sure if what I am taking (Maxalt) could prevent aura too....in its box, instruction does not tell me that it makes me dizzy or sleepy, but as a matter of fact it made me sleepy and if I do not sleep, my migraine does not go away. If migraine continues, I get speech problem as my last phase....I thought my brain is damaged or something.....anyway I joined the forum. thank you

Great!  I think you will enjoy the forum.  I hope you will find people there with similar experiences and problems.

You can click on Drug Information under Find, and you should be able to get to Maxalt info eventually.  It does list drowsiness as a potential side effect, and it contains some other info you should be aware of.

I really resisted taking preventives, too.  Eventually I had to accept that it was much healthier for me to take the medicine my doctor recommended to prevent migraines than to live through the migraine symptoms.  Most likely you've taken meds for other illnesses, even if only short term.  This disease is just as real.  It can't be cured, but it can be managed.

I know I credit my preventive, Inderal, with giving me my life back.  What a relief!

Please take care of yourself.  I'll be glad to see you posting on the forum.
