Does anyone treat migraines with pain medicine?

By jettygirl Wednesday, April 18, 2007
I have been to a few nuerologists and they put me on many different kinds of triptans, topomax, antidepressants and I have no luck. The only thing that sometimes work is narcotics(what they give in the er through iv). I understand that Doctors do not want to prescribe this type of medicine but when it works it works and when the migraine is over you use the medicine the next time. Any thoughts or ideas?

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Another reason many doctors don't like to prescribe opioids is that they literally cannot stop a Migraine attack, and it's better for our health to stop an attack as soon as possible. They can only mask the pain for a few hours. If the Migraine is gone when the meds wear off, it doesn't mean that the meds did it; it means that the Migraine ran its course.

I don't know how many of the triptans you've tried, but there are now seven of them. Each binds to different combinations of serotonin receptors, so it's worth trying them all. Injectable DHE and Migranal Nasal spray are ergotamine Migraine abortives.

Hi there, I can't use triptans due to the other medication I am on, so I use Clotam to stop my migraines when they happen.  However, this taken with Dihydrocodine or Tramadol eases the pain until the Clotam starts working, and I also take Stemetil to stop my vomiting.  I would recomend these combinations to everyone!!
