Migraine-Associated Vertigo

By ChristinL Sunday, August 05, 2012

I was recently diagnosed with Migraine-Associated Vertigo (instead of getting headaches, I'm quite dizzy all the time, occasionally get nauseated, and have trouble concentrating).  My neurologist wants to try putting me on a tricyclic antidepressent to help with the problem.  I haven't started taking it just yet.

Has anyone else experienced MAV?  If so, what treatments worked for you and what were your experiences?

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

I'm so glad you've found ushttp://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/c/836681/155057/migraine/comment, it is really important to have support when we have a new diagnosis. Let's see what information I can give you to lend a hand.

First, I don't have Migraine-associated vertigo (MAV) and hope some folks will be along shortly to help with their experiences. We have some information on Migraine, dizziness and vertigo you might find interesting. You can continue to read more about that in Migraine and Prevalence of Dizziness and Vertigo.

Any particular reason you haven't started the medication your doctor prescribed? It might be very helpful and you may only have to use it for a short while.

Hi Nancy!

Thanks for the information, I'll be sure to look at it - I'm doing as much research as I can right now to see what I can do to alleviate the vertigo.

I just haven't received my prescription from the pharmacy yet.  At first my neurologist was going to put me on Depakote, but after reading some stuff about it I was very hesitant to take it.  She called in a new prescription for me the other day, for the antidepressants, so as soon as I can pick those up I'll get started on them :)

I have migraines that come with vertigo and dizziness. Nortriptyline was the first medication that I took. It didn't help the headaches, but it definitely helped with the vertigo and dizziness. Later, I was put on Topamax which helped both.

Thanks Jessica!

I'm currently taking Amitriptyline, which is similar, I think.  I've only been on it for about four days so I'm not sure if it's working yet.  Crossing my fingers!
