Hi, My name is Diane and i am from Southampton, England, United Kingdom. I have suffered with migraines since i was a child, i am now 43 years old! The pain is so severe when the migraines hit their peak i have quite often blacked out. Last year i was diagnosed with a large hole in my heart and had an Amplazter device fitted to fill the hole, my murmur has disappeard and they said it would possibly help with my migraines, for 8 months after the surgery i was migraine free, but two weeks ago i had one of the worst migraines ever! I take daily Propanalol to help with the irregular heart beats (common with inserts) and they said this would help the migraines, but it hasn't! I have started having weekly Acupuncture and am hoping if this will also help? I would also like to know if there is any other pain killers i could take as all my current medicines do not get rid of the pain! I take Ritriptan or Zomorph also i have tried Migramx. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Diane x

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!
Propanalol is also used as a Migraine preventive medication, but some people a combination of medications to control their attacks. Don't lose hope, there are over 100 medications used for Migraine prevention. Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!
Are you by chance taking Ritriptan (Maxalt) or any other OTC medication everyday? This can create another type of headache called Medication Overuse Headache. You can find information on that HERE. If you have MOH, no preventive drug, like Propanalol, will work.

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your reply, i only take the Maxalt when i have a Migraine, i do not use as a preventive etc.
I have managed to gather quite alot of information now with regards to different Medicines. Armed with this info I have an appointment with my Doctor next week and will let you know how it goes. He generally is a good GP, but is lacking in information when it comes to the different Migraines treatments available.
Thanks again for a wonderful web site, i'm just so glad i found it.
Kind regards
Diane x
