self medicating a big mistake

By molly cruz Tuesday, January 03, 2012

Menopause brought on depression, so on the advice of a friend I took DHEA, cheap over the counter, and I had no idea what it was really. It worked, and I never made the connection between taking in and the Ocular Migraines I began to have, nor did I understand what they were until an opthalmologist explained them to me: painless migraines with sever partial blindness. I had them at least bi-monthly, did nothing about them since they lasted only twenty minutes or so and went away. After five years I stopped taking the DHEA and so did I stop having the ocular migraines, almost immediately; and in the last four years have had only two or three minor ones, with spotty blindness, very brief, seemingly connected with hot dogs of all things.

Congratulations on recognizing the link between the DHEA supplement and your migraines! Glad you found the trigger. I hope your depression stayed away once you came off it, too.

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

As you said, self medicating is never a good idea. A conversation with our health care provider is always the way to go, and if he/she isn't listening then it's time to find one who will!!

Anyway, I'm glad to hear about the "reduction" in your Migraines. Most doctors follow the "gold standard" of the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II), for diagnosing Migraines and other headache disorders. "Ocular Migraine" is not a standard diagnosis per the ICHD-II, and when it is used by doctors, it's used differently by different doctors. That makes it hard for me to know what kind of information to offer you about your Migraines. Take a look at Ocular, Optical and Ophthalmic Migraines when you get a chance. Another good article is The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

Anyone who has three or more Migraines a month needs to be talking with their doctor about prevention. There's growing evidence that Migraine is a progressive brain disease. A recent study showed that Migraines can cause brain damage, and that people with three or more Migraines a month are more susceptible to this damage. For more information, see Is Migraine a Progressive Brain Disease?,  Yes, Migraines Can Cause Brain Damage, and Migraine with Aura Linked to Late-Life Brain Lesions.
