Icepicks, TMJ, and a migraine can ruin a week.  Do auras include an astute awareness of surroundings?  Like things are really clear, or loud, intense?  Does anyone else have a relation between the TMJ and the migraines?  My doctor was telling me about Trigeminal something?  I have had good luck with amitriptyline so far and using a splint, but I am still new to this and I always have that "dread" feeling-I have to plan my week in case I get blasted thing.  What a miserable malady.

Aura can be many things: visual disturbances, smelling things that are not there, euphoria - just to name a few. Anatomy of a Migraine explains all about the phases of Migraine and what can happen during them.

The nerve your doctor is speaking of is the trigeminal nerve. We have an excellent illustration: HERE.

Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. TMJ can definitely trigger a Migraine, but it is not the CAUSE. We have information on our site for both Ice Pick Headache and also Migraine. You can find information on both: HERE.

Hi, I have TMJ and migraines (inherited).  I had my TMJ work done about 10 years ago and it's made a big difference.  I used to have sinus infections and don't anymore.  I can usually go about 6 mos between my adjustments now.  When I need an adjustment I can get almost immediate migraine relief at the time of adjustment.  Calli

Hi and thanks very much.

I have been doing well using the splint at night, but for some reason I had really bad sleep last night and woke up just miserable.  I have an appt for next Tues for an adj.  I think maybe the one side is a little off now.  The sinus surgery helped me a lot.  I have been washing my nose since and I have wondered if the cool water doesn't set the headaches off sometimes?

Do you take any meds?  What kind of work did you have done?  Some days I just wish my face would come off.

Hi  Laughing   Sorry you didn't have a good night.  I was waking up at 3 a.m. years ago before I knew I had tmj.  The Dr gave me Trazodone to take at bedtime and I quit waking up.  It's a sleeping pill relaxer I think.  Every so often I will take one but not much anymore.  I had a splint at first too but I was grinding the back of it off in my sleep, my dog got ahold of it and finished it off!  I had the regular tmj adjustments done then need "tune ups" at least 4 times a year.  I can usually get in the next day for them, just in and out.

I haven't tried the water in my nose.  I've heard of using warm salted water.  Also putting a towel over your head and a bowl of steaming hot water with salt in it and breathing it. I've done that.  I've been using a simple Vicks Vapor Inhaler, just the stick kind that's about $1.59 instead of the $40 prescription sprays and like it just as well.  Do you have allergies?

The meds I'm on are Depakote (prevention) Tylenol w/codiene, and Relpax.  I think I've tried almost everything or feel like it anyway!   Are you on any meds?  I hope so, we need relief from these darn migraines!  I just found this site a couple of months ago and so far I think it's the best one I've seen, lots of info.  Talk to ya later!  Laughing  Calli

Thanks.  Yeah that waking up thing constantly is a pita.  I was doing Ambien CR for quite some time but even that-I had the 3 am wake up call.  It drives me nuts.  When I switched to amitriptyline I was sleeping the whole night, but I am back on 3 am wake up now.  I am trying to figure out if it has something to do with my husband getting up at that hour.  I don't think I hear him, but maybe I do?  The ami does help with the headaches.  I take Imitrex if it has gone too far, like last night, I finally said the heck with it and took one.  Exercise seems to help for prevention.  Weather I think is a big factor, we had a front go by last night.  It is gone now, and I feel better.

LOL the dog eh?  My cat bats mine around too on occasion.  I did go one night without it and I was messed up the next day.

Do you get grouchy before it comes?  I find myself really annoyed, like kicking the vacuum cleaner yesterday.  Food tastes different too.

It is a miserable thing.  I don't know how I managed before the medicine.  I guess I was a real jerk!

Does anyone else in your family suffer?  Supposedly I get some kind of "look" too.

Have you tried any homeopathic remedies?  Massage?
