Icepicks, TMJ, and a migraine can ruin a week. Do auras include an astute awareness of surroundings? Like things are really clear, or loud, intense? Does anyone else have a relation between the TMJ and the migraines? My doctor was telling me about Trigeminal something? I have had good luck with amitriptyline so far and using a splint, but I am still new to this and I always have that "dread" feeling-I have to plan my week in case I get blasted thing. What a miserable malady.

Sorry you didn't have a good night. I was waking up at 3 a.m. years ago before I knew I had tmj. The Dr gave me Trazodone to take at bedtime and I quit waking up. It's a sleeping pill relaxer I think. Every so often I will take one but not much anymore. I had a splint at first too but I was grinding the back of it off in my sleep, my dog got ahold of it and finished it off! I had the regular tmj adjustments done then need "tune ups" at least 4 times a year. I can usually get in the next day for them, just in and out.
Aura can be many things: visual disturbances, smelling things that are not there, euphoria - just to name a few. Anatomy of a Migraine explains all about the phases of Migraine and what can happen during them.
The nerve your doctor is speaking of is the trigeminal nerve. We have an excellent illustration: HERE.
Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. TMJ can definitely trigger a Migraine, but it is not the CAUSE. We have information on our site for both Ice Pick Headache and also Migraine. You can find information on both: HERE.
