1st abortive received -- advice on how to take needed

By devgurl00 Wednesday, December 19, 2007

yesterday was headache doctor visit. in the past month, i had only 5 migraines, yay!!! he upped the topamax, said i should continue taking the zanaflex when i need it. i told him how work is not so supportive when i need to take off work b/c i have a headache and he wrote a script for an abortive called Axert, which i understand is a triptan. he said it may not make me as sleepy as the zanaflex, which is not a true abortive. so i filled the axert ($50!) and have not yet had to take it.

i'm glad to have it. i'm supposed to take it at the first sign of migraine. does that mean i take it when i'm prodromey, or when i get the first pain? what if i can't tell if it's going to be a migraine or just a really bad headache? sometimes i can't tell and i don't always get the aura first. it seems like the headaches are random.

think i'll post in the forum too to see what anyone has to say.

to be one of the biggest questions, for me as well. If you can tell that are experiencing prodrome, that would be a good time to take your Axert. By the time you get to the headache phase, it may be too late to abort. But I always try!

Did that help??

I take zomig, which is also aa triptan.  Most of the time I get the "aura" but there are the exceptions when I don't.  I have found if I'm a little late in taking it (I realize late that indeed it's a migraine) I take it anyways, and it may be slow in taking effect, but it kicks in.  Better late than never!  Hope this helps!
