I've had migraines since childhood, but they only became a real problem in the last five years or so. Looking around, I see a lot of people who have had problems like mine in trying to get help. Doctors! I used to think my family doctor was great. Now I think he's a patronizing, condescending, ilinformed chauvinist! He kept telling me it was something "some women just have to put up with," that I'd feel better if I made myself go about my day regardless of migraines.
I'm now embarrassed to realize how long I accepted that without questioning it. Last year, my husband gave me a copy of "Living Well with Migraine Disease and Headaches" for Mother's Day. Again, I'm embarrassed. I put the book on a shelf and didn't read it unitl my husband read it and read some parts of it aloud to me. I cried because parts of it sounded just like my so-called life.
I fired my doctor's "sorry butt," and that was the beginning. I'm still not where I need to be with my migraines, but I'm getting there.
Several months ago, I followed some links in the book. I discovered that Teri Robert isn't at about.com, but Google is a wonderful thing. I found her here in no time at all. I've been lurking here without posting, but today, I decided to write this post. It's Mother's Day, and because of Mrs. Robert's book, her Help for Headaches site, and this site, my husband and I are about to go out for the afternoon. Last year, we couldn't go out because I had still another migraine.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you Mothers, and a special one to Mrs. Robert. You have changed my life so much, all of it for the better. May God bless you, your family, and your work.
Gratefully,
Lucie
