I have been taking Zonisamide since April of last year and it is no longer working! I just wish I could find something that would work on these horrid things. The doctor has upped the Zonisamide to 300mg in the hopes that it will work but I don't see any difference. It's just causing other p...

Tips for pain relief and possibly prevention
lambchop
Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 10:20 AMI have been getting migraines since 18 years old and I am now one year away from half a century. I can relate to your pain and frustration of medications not being effective anymore. I alternate between two extra strength excedrines with a strong cup of tea (it's the caffeine that brings the main relief) and Maxalt 10 mg. I have learned to figure out which of these pain reliefs should be more beneficial depending on the preliminary pain I get before the headache is able to spiral out of control. It seems to be crucial to be able to control the pain at the very first sign of a migraine as if you wait until the pain increases, the pain meds will probably not be as effective. Also weather changes and fronts coming in a huge trigger for me - so if a season is coming to an end and a new one is on its way, I try to avoid any trigger foods so my threshold tolerance is higher. A great book to read is "Heal My Headache" by Dr. David Buckholtz, a neurologist at John's Hopkins. Very helpful advise in this book. Anyway, it's a constant struggle to remain pain free, but I have to constantly remind myself everyday that it's still better to have this condition than so many other possibilities.
Hope your're able to find some long term relief.

We're glad to help. Migraine is a genetic neurologic disease, your family history explains a lot!
How long have you been taking 300mg of Zonisamide? Any time we have a dose increase our bodies may take a while to adjust to the new dose. Now it may feel like you have tried everything, I know it feels like I have, but it really isn't possible! Let me know what you think after you read: Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up !
Have you tried keeping a diary? Sometimes actually writing things down can help us see things more clearly, at least for me it does. We have a Migraine diary you can download HERE. And maybe this will help too..... Migraines and Headaches - Tips for Living Well All Year. Just some tools to help you get through.
Hang in there......
