VKH Syndrom

By Lisa S Thursday, July 28, 2011

Hi out there!  Well its offical.  I have VKH syndrom.  It attacks the eyes and the autoamun system.  It is treated with heavy steriods, antibotics, and bone desity meds.  I went to an appt with a Rumatologist yesterday to get more information and treatment.  She was very knowlegable in the syndrom.  I had a chest x ray and bone densty tesst ( because of the high dosage of steriods Im on).  I have to take Fosamax once a week, Bactrine three times a week, and the 60mg steriods.  The doc said that I will be on them for at least 6 months.  6 months, WOW!  My mouth just dropped on the floor.  The full treatment is 2 years if things dont get it together.  Go to this web site for more information on the symtoms http://rarediseases.about.com/od/rarediseasesv/a/vkh.htm.  Go to symtoms and that is what I went through three months ago and about a week ago with my right eye, but we caught it fast enough to head it off.  I tell you it scares me to know that I have this and one of my children could have it.  But there is no pre test to give them to see if they carry the gene.  I have been wearing glasses since I was 2 and life has been rough every since for me.  I get yearly check ups and had had one a month before the symtoms even started.  I do have to say that since we caught it so fast with the second eye, I was able to get enough steriods in me to pass the eye test for my driver's lic.  Shocking.  But I need my state id and driver lic.  Can you imangin not being able to function with sight or being able to drive.  Im doing ok now.  I can read things off the tv now, I do puzzles, needle point, and read magazines.  But what a scary thing to go through right now.  Three  months of waiting to get a diagonis and now its going to be a long road to recovery.  Read the symtoms.  They do enclude headaces and for those of you who did not read where did my eye sight go, I had a migrain for 5 weeks before my eye sight went black.  I have since regain light and some eye sight in the left eye, yepi!  The right eye is doing great.  Thanks for reading!

Why did my headaches change to Migraines?

I'm sorry to hear about your new diagnosis, but glad to hear you finally have some answers. It must be a total relief. Now you can treat!!!

I am so happy you finally got a correct diagnosis, even though it may be a rare and scary one.  You are a courageous person, and I have no doubt you will come through all this as well as you possibly can.  Losing eyesight is a tough thing to go through, but if you can now pass your driver's test that is a great accomplishment from the first note you wrote on this site.  Congratulations I hope everything continues to get better for you!

Wow, very glad you were able to get a diagnosis. And glad you jumped on your health care. My boss stayed at a conference over the weekend several months ago even as his vision deteriorated and almost lost his vision in one eye b/c of a detached retina. MEN! He had to have emergency surgery. My own vision is very bad since a child but I had lasik done several years ago to just bring it to 20/40 so I know how precious it is. I am so grateful every morning when I can see the trees without my thick glasses or contacts which were becoming harder to wear. I hope you continue to improve and don't have to stay on the meds for years. And hopefully your children will be spared! I've already passed on the migraine gene to one child and asthma gene to another so I feel your anxiety on that one!

Take care of yourself and family and keep us posted.
