I'm off to see the Headach Speacalist!

  • Hello Team Migraine!

To catch up everyone and re-introduce myself to everyone, my name is Lisa and I have been suffering from migraines since I was about 5 years old.  I take Topamax, Nureton, Maxalt, and some other for break through headachs.  Lately I have been suffering from ( what feels like) one big long headach since May 22nd.  I have had to visit the ER at least 7 times since then.  The Nureo I was seeing here told me I was to much and needed to see a Specalist, so off they shipped me.  The only issue, I could not get in until September ( this was back in July).

My appointment was set for Sept. 15th and then we had a big storm and power was knocked out.  They canceled the appointment and rescheduled for two weekes latter.  So, here we are.  I have three break through headaches since.  My headaches are called Baislar Autery Migrains.  And before everyone starts in on the OTC, or the over use meds, I DO NOT take my pain meds every time I get a headache.  I do follow my maintace meds to the letter, but I refuse to go down the road of over use.  I did go through that two times and let me tell you coming off that was not the best feeling in the world!  I have a very high tolaret level for pain.  I can walk around for days in pain, but when I lose vision is when I know I have to take something.  I hate being accused of taking to much pain meds.  And that is what a lot of people ( including health care professionals and other suffers) do.

So, all in all, I wish everyone who has to go see thier doctor and a new doctor the best of luck this week.  Wish you a happy week.  May happy days come to you.  Please know there is someone out there who has what you have and shares what you have.  You are not alone.  I'm no docator, but I'm here to listen.  Cool

Well, yesterday was my appointment with my new doctor.  I hate going to new doctors or the ER.  Some doctors don't believe me or thier eyes get so big that I think they are ones who are going to pass out.  Then they say " well let's just see if that is really what is wrong with you".

Well, yesterday was my appointment with my new doctor.  I hate going to new doctors or the ER.  Some doctors don't believe me or thier eyes get so big that I think they are ones who are going to pass out.  Then they say " well let's just see if that is really what is wrong with you".

The whole ride ( all 40 mins) I was chatty and shaking.  I never know what to expect.  To be mad, excited, scared.  You know what do you feel.  Every doctor wants to poke you or put down the one before, thier opion is better.  So we get there 15 mins early, they take me in right away.  She comes in.  First thing she says, "how bad is your head hurting today?"  Ok, does she ask everyone or does she just recogonize the fact that I'm squniting and I look like hell?  Who knows.  I tell her off the standard scale, "its an 8 today.  Yesterday I couldn't stand up.  At least today I could go to work."  Then we get into my history and the medications I have taken in the past.  Everyone always ask about Midrin as the first pain med for migrains.  I now know that is the first pain med.  Then we talk about my current regiment of meds and pain meds and the type of migrains I have now.

She informs me that with my symptoms and the type of migrains that I have she thinks that I have two things going on.  (1) I have my regular migrain going on and (2) I have a tension headach on top of it.  She also thinks that I should have never been put on Maxalt.  Due to it constricting the blood vesals and in my sitaution I don't need any more of that, it has put me at a higher risk of a stroke.  I have also shown signs seizers  How about them apples!?  I can be watching TV and the commercials will come on and three commericals into it and I will forget what I'm watching.  This is just one example of what has happened.

So in short, I have to have another MRI, EEG, and Dapakot IV envosion.  Two new medications later and I should be breaking this headach.  Well that's all for now.

Love, peace, and happy days ahead!

Seeing a Migraine/Headache specialist is the most important step we can take towards receiving an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan for our Migraines. Do you have all your questions ready for your appointment? We have some information that may be helpful for your first visit to the speicalist, continue reading Migraineur's Guide To a Successful Doctor's Appointment. This article, Migraine and Headache Specialists  -What's So Special? has more good information on this topic.

Basilar-Type Migraine(BTM) is a Migraine attack with aura symptoms coming from the brain stem and can affect both sides of the brain at the same time. This type of Migraine has no motor weakness, which is important, because there is another type of Migraine that does have true motor weakness as one of its main symptoms. This Migraine is Hemiplegic Migraine.
