Failure to acknowledge the role of posture and/or jaw position in causing "migraine"

By drneilzane Tuesday, August 21, 2007

I am dentist who has been studying the TMJ and myofascial pain for over twenty years. For the past eight years I have been treating patients with a technique called Neuromuscular Dentistry (NM). NM was started in the sixties by a dentist in Seattle who felt that dentistry paid little or no attention to the role of the bite in the deterioration of the dentition. His technique has expanded beyond reconstructive dentistry to the treatment of those suffering from migraines and intractable headaches. I have had great success dealing with these patients as well. I surf the internet looking at sites that deal with these maladies. I am shocked and disappointed that there is no mention of the jaw, forward head posture, and bite. All that is discussed is the treatment via pharmaceuticals. I just had a patient this morning who told me of a 'world famous' specialist who told him that there is no correlation between tmj problems and headache and little or no correlation between migraines and tmj (more correctly TMD, tempromandibular dysfunction). Such ignorance is scary and to say the least, dangerous for it narrows the treatment possibilities and deprives the patient of a cure.

Hello,

With all due respect, there is no cure to Migraine disease. TMJ and other such disorders can trigger Migraine attacks, but Migraineurs usually have other triggers as well.
