Two Weeks on Inderal

After my "drug holiday", my doctor decided to try me on Inderal as a preventive. I started out taking 1/2 a 10mg pill in the morning, and again in the evening. Now, I am up to one 10mg pill in the morning and again in the evening.

I have to say, so far, I feel pretty good! The Inderal does make me a tad dizzy from time to time, and the first few nights on it I had horrible nightmares, but yesterday was my first touch of Migraine since starting it!

My doctor said he would watch me closely on this drug, since it is primarily used to lower blood pressure. I have a normal to low blood pressure to start, so any sign of it giving me a problem, we will back the dosage down.

So far I feel optimistic about it. Then again, my first month on Topamax I was Migraine free too.

My doctor also gave me Zanaflex to treat my Tension-Type Headaches, since the Midrin was not working for me.

I have used the Zanaflex a few times in the last two weeks, and find it works GREAT for me!! I am so happy to have finally found something that works for my Tension Headaches!! I find that I had a harder time treating my Tension Headaches then my Migraines, since I never knew what to try for them. Now, I have found something that works and no longer feel like I'm grasping at straws, trying whatever I can to make them stop. I try and get rid of the Tension Headaches as soon as they strike because they can be a Migraine trigger for me.

I see my doctor again in October, after I've been on the Inderal for six weeks. That way we will have an accurate picture on if the Inderal is definitely working for me.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Laughing

I found this website yesterday, and I am glad to hear that others suffer as I do.  I also am currently taking Inderal but 40mg once a day, and it has not been helping.  I have a headache daily from mild to severe and probably 2-3 full blown migraines a month.  I have baffled my family dr, my neurologist and my neurosurgeon as they can't figure out what is causing them.  My family dr was going to suggest increasing my dosage of inderal, but since my BP is already at 90/54 she thinks it will make the situation worse.  My neurologist had me on Topomax, but that didn't truly work either and caused the worst of the worst side effects and my weight plummented.  Imitrex made me loopy and Relpax helps if I catch it in time, but is temporary.  As you can see I am sort of at my wits end, and feel totally defeated.

But I am glad to hear it's working for you, and hope you have continued success.

Hi!

Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!

I am sorry to hear you are suffering and that nothing you've tried so far seems to be doing the trick. I am no longer in Inderal either, since it made me way too dizzy. I too have a normally low blood pressure and was having dizzy spells with Inderal.

Migraine is a genetic neurological disease to which, currently, there is no cure. But, the good news is there are over 100 medications that are being used as preventive treatments. You can see the entire list: HERE.

You mention having mild to severe head pain daily. Have you heard of Medication Overuse Headache, aka Rebound? This type of headache can happen when we take too many of the medications used to help with the pain or abort a Migraine. For more informaion on MOH, check out: Medication Overuse Headache: When Remedy Backfires and also: Stopping Medication Overuse Can Halt Transformed Migraine.

We also have a list of patient recommended Migraine Specialists - if you feel you are getting nowhere from your current physicians, it may be time to find someone else. You can check out the list: HERE

Also, feel free to come on over to the forum side of the site, if you have not already! You can reach it by clicking this link: http://forums.healthcentral.com/discussion/migraine/forums?ic=4026 You will have to make another user name and password for that side of the site, but feel free to use the same information you used for this side if you would like.

Good luck to you!

Eileen,

I was curious if in the long run Inderal has helped? I've had chronic daily headaches and occasional migraines that began a little over a year ago and I have tried a variety of abortive drugs, some not so successful. I was aware of beta blockers and asked if this was an option but my neurologist was quick to dismiss them due to my low blood pressure. I found this forum in doing my own research to find out how others have responded and yours is one of the only first person accounts I've come across.

Recently I sought out a new Dr. who has said that in low doses inderal may work. I've only just begun them this week. My first experience was that suddenly everything seemed suddenly very sharp and in focus - like my blinders were taken off. I don't experience any dizziness, just a little bit of pressure in my ears - which is not uncommon or uncomfortable. I used to get that sensation often in the past. I also have tremors which intensify when my headache begins and which he said that inderal should help with too. As I said, if you get a chance or if someone new joins this forum seeking information - I'd be very interested in hearing what their experience with beta blockers has been.
