After years of suffering up to 13 migraines a month I have finally found relief. A fellow migraine sufferer told me about a book that has made all the difference in the world. The book is, Heal your Headache The 1-2-3 program by David Buchholz, M.D. and it has become a bible for ...

I've read it too...

Monday, January 07, 2008 at 02:27 AMI've read that book too. Thought parts of it were good, especially some of the things he said about communication between patients and doctors.
His food trigger list is pretty good, but the way his diet is set up is more difficult than it has to be. No reason to eliminate foods forever, just until you can determine which, if any, are food triggers.
What I really disliked though is what he says about rebound. He has it backwards about what causes rebound.
Of course the book has hundreds of reviews. I've heard it's required reading for at least one class he teaches at the medical school at Johns Hopkins. If I were taking that class, I'd leave a review on Amazon too!
Don't misunderstand. It's a good book, but parts of it are disproven by plenty of medical journal articles and by the experiences of people here.
There are four books I've read more than once and keep close by. The Buchholz book is one. The other three are:
*Living Well With Migraine Disease and Headaches by Teri Robert
*Migraine and Other Headaches by Young and Silberstein
*The Headache Prevention Cookbook by Dr. David Marks
If I had to limit myself to one book, it would be the "Living Well" book that Teri Robert wrote. That one's my "bible."

Abi

Monday, January 07, 2008 at 10:45 AMHi, Thanks for the reply. You are correct on the information about rebound. I do know that tylenol and aleve can cause rebound. I was taking those on a near daily basis along with replax when I would get a migraine. I was probably rebounding all over the place. However, the information he has about eliminating all triggers is right on the money. It's not forever, it's for four months, after which time you start adding back one thing at a time. I will say my migraines stopped dead in there tracks. I believe now that my migraines were in big part due to MSG. It was in everything I ate! Protein bars, soups, Healthy Choice meals, etc. Pretty much anything I ate that would be considered a convenience food, had it in it.
As for the reviews on Amazon, if you read them you'll see that they are written by people who have been long time sufferers, not students as required reading. One review after the other, after the other are from people who have found relief and a better life. I am extremely leary of a review from a medical personnel's "opinion". Unless they've suffered migraines, they DO NOT understand. I've been to my physician, an ENT, and a nuerologist and all they did was prescribe medication....................no education, just medication. And the dosage kept increasing. That is not a life I want to live. This book has enabled me to come off all preventitive medication and live a pain free exsistance. That is success and it's long term success.
If you are a migraine sufferer and you want to take control of your treatment, you will find help in this book. My last visit to my physician, he thanked me and apologized to me. He thanked me for taking control and digging in and finding what works. He took down all the information and will be passing it on to his other migraine patients, and he apologized that he did not know about this before.
I can only pass on what has worked for me, and until I found this book, nothing worked. Good luck!

Monday, January 07, 2008 at 11:05 AMI'm so thrilled that you've been able to make the first breakthru towards getting control of your headaches. I too have read Dr. Buchholz' book, along with about every other migraine book written since 2000 and several before (including the most current medical texts and many journal articles). He does provide a good starting point, but as Teri's review points out, many of the things he discusses, especially about which drugs don't cause rebound, which do, when, and how, have been totally disproven by medical research. As with most books, I recommend that people take out of them what works and keep educating themselves with more reading. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Teri Robert's LIVING WELL WITH MIGRAINE DISEASE AND HEADACHES. Had her book been available in 2003, I'd have never started on my own!

I'm so glad you're doing better. Many people are helped by getting better control of their triggers.
The book you mentioned has some great points, and some points that may not be as good. I'd suggest you take a look at this review: "Heal Your Headache" Review .
We'd love to have you over at the discussion forum for further information and support. To get there, click on Migraine Forums under the orange Manage bar. Registration for the forum is separate from the registration for this page, but you can use the same info to register.
Good luck as you continue to identify and manage your triggers, and as you continue to manage your migraines.
