The true abortives are triptans, ergotamines, and Midrin. Triptans and ergotamines are both contraindicated with basilar-type Migraines.
For anyone here to suggest anything would be giving medical advice, and we can't do that. It's simply not safe.
I know it doesn't help you right now, but if your doctor can't see you when you're in this tough a situation, without waiting for days, maybe it's time to find a new doctor.
Hope you get some answers and relief soon,
Teri

Monday, January 07, 2008 at 05:47 PMSo you can take Midrin for that type of headache if that is what I have?
Look, I know that you all can't write me prescriptions and such...the best I can hope for I think is suggestions of what I can ask my dr. for.
I am supposed to see a specialist but they can't get me in until next month, so my regular doctor will have to do for now.
I think there is something wrong with the doctors in MO, or maybe it is that there just aren't enough of them. But they (myself and my friends/family have seen several different ones) won't let you in without at least a days notice no matter what is wrong with you. They say if you can't wait a day, then you should just go to the hospital...well, I have already been there but since I am not in danger of dying and I'm not in intense pain they won't keep me. I have even been turned away in person from general practicioners offices before.
If I try to go out of network to my old doctors in IL who will let me in the moment I show up at the door, the insurance won't cover a penny of it and I just can't afford to do that again.
I don't mean to sound like I am snapping at anyone, if I do, I'm jsut going out of my mind cause I'm a visual person and this screen reader program may read the words on the screen to me but I just don't undestand things that way.

You don't sound like you're snapping; you sound like you're in pain and probably a bit frightened. I get it. Sorry if it seemed I didn't want to help.
What I can tell you is that I know of people who take Midrin for basilar-type Migraine (BTM), and it works for some of them. How's that?
I also understand about the doctors. I don't know where you are in Missouri, but there are some wonderful Migraine specialists there. I know Dr. Roger Cady and his staff in Springfield are well acquainted with all forms of Migraine including BTM. Look in the orange "Manage" box in the left column of this page. If you click on "Working With Doctors," you'll see a link to our directory of patient recommended specialists. You can see who might be possible with your insurance and location. I mean that for the future. Right now, you don't have much choice but to see your own doctor this week.
Wish I could be more help, Laurelin. I've known people to take Midrin, and for people Midrin doesn't work for, I've know them to take NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and to take nausea meds and try to sleep. For most people, if they can get into the really deep, restorative sleep, it will abort the Migraine.
I really hope you get feeling better. If you want some additional support, please join us on the forum. (Also a link in the "Manage box.)

Friday, January 11, 2008 at 11:07 AMThanks Teri.
I've been nearsighted most of my life but it's just really terrifying to start to have your vision go all crazy and not have any one be able to help you. Especially when you can tell that it freaks out the hospital staff and the EMT accidently mentions that they woke up a whole building of people and made them come into work when the place is normally closed so I could have an MRI.
Of course I run all the ideas about meds and diagnosises past my doctors first. But my current GP, well, neurology isn't her area which is why she is sending me to a specialist. So I like to gather up some ideas to run them by her when I go there. I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one who has the time and dedication to research me enough to find the answers. And this site and people have some great information.
Although now in retrospect I shouldn't have bothered because not only would she not listen to me on Wed. but she told me that "people have headaches and work through them all the time. There's no reason you should ever have to go home." So obviously she is not the gp for me but I have to put up with her until I get into a different one. And I ranted about that enough in a different post.

Migraine's are horrible!

Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 07:33 AMI watched a program on Discovery Health...Mystery Diagnosis and the woman's problems mirrored yours. She couldn't tilt her head back in the shower either without falling over due to the dizziness. It turned out she had a rare kind of anemia and needed B-12 shots. Her body was not absorbing certain nutrients properly through her stomach. The name of her disease was: pernicious anemia. You may want to have a doctor check you for that.
I had all the same symptoms as you dizziness, numbness, etc. I also had an MRI lots of blood test and it didn't help at all. I got glasses, upped my intake of red meat, stopped all migraine triggers and dropped my migraines down from 1 full week per month to a 1 day migraine in 5 months. Also I recommend a real good neck massage regularly for about a week.
I found that fresh bread (pizza dough, etc.), banana's and nuts will give me a migraine in no time flat.
I hope you find out why this is happening to you. Good luck!
