i was recently at my hospital's er with an acute migraine. i am on disability due to my migraines. this young doctor comes in for a minute and then leaves. the nurse returns with a steroid shot, which does nothing for my migraine. my arthritis felt better for a few days though. i told the nurse the medication would not work and she said this was all the doctor would give and my dismissal papers were being prepared. i asked to speak to the doctor to no avail. i went home in worse shape than before.i thought everone had a right to pain control. even my regular doctor could do nothing since she had not seen me in the last 24 hours.how do you make someone understand your pain. i thought about telling him a bullet to the head could ease my pain but i was afraid they would commit me. i take regular meds from my neurologist yet sometimes i get very severe headaches and need some pain relief. someone please help me.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

What an awful experience at the ER. No one should be treated that way. We do have a ER form you can have your doctor fill out and take with you when going to the ER.

Are you on a preventive plan? There are many medications available to treat Migraine disease.

There are headache clinics out there.  I've been going to one for 15+ years and they know what they're doing.  Go to www.NationalHeadacheFoundation.org and you should be able to see who would be closest to your area.

I was wrong on the actual website address for the National Headache Foundation--the correct address is www.headaches.org

This is just a suggestion, but perhaps the next time you see your neurologist you could discuss the ER visit. Your doctor may be willing to write a letter that you carry with you giving a brief summary of your extensive treatment, and even better, emergency medications that do and do not work. If so, you could present this letter during your next ER visit, giving some MEDICAL reinforcement to your complaints. Not all ER docs take migraine pain seriously, but everyone deserves to be heard.
