new drug

By JP Brown Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Today I woke up to another migraine.  It started with the monthly hormonal change.  I tried to avoid all triggers in the belief that I would be spared the pain.  No luck of course.  Fortunately, I had a Doctor's appointment already scheduled and this provided the opportunity for him to observe me in the migraine state.  He decided to order the M.R.I. that the Physical Therapist requested over two months ago after seeing the X-rays of my neck.  The other thing that came of the visit was he gave me a sample of a brand new oral triptan.  I decided not to use it today as I needed to get rid of the headache as soon as I could, so I used an imitrex injection.  The doctor didn't have alot of information on how quickly the new drug would work nor how effective it would be.  I decided that I would try it another time when time wasn't such a factor.  The new drug is called Treximet.  If anyone has used this or has information regarding it's degree of effectiveness, I would appreciate any input.

Thank you,

All I can say is, this is Imitrex and Aleive, (naproxim sodium) Not sure if that's spelled right. It's a pain reliever & imitrex. I have taken both. First imitrex is an abortive, and it may help. I can't take abortives such as this. It's a triptan. That's the drug class. Such as Relpax, Frova, and Maxalt, and Axert & Zomig. Basically Imitrex goes into this class. So, I personally don't have faith in it. But, it might work for some. ??? Midrin is the best abortive for me. While others have their own regimen.

Good luck.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

Treximet, is a combination of sumatriptan and naproxen. Taken at the first sign of a Migraine attack, Treximet works best. The directions say if there is no relief after two hours another dose may be taken, no more than two in 24 hours. That's something to confirm with your doctor.

You mentioned that you've tried to stay away from your triggers. Have you ever kept a Migraine diary? It is a easy way to see what is really going on with triggers and medications. We have a free downloadable diary you can get HERE.

I got a sample of this from my doctor last week.  I immediately got jaw pain and some body aches.  But after an hour or so my headache was completely gone and so were the side effects.  So if you don't mind the side effects then this is a good medicine to take.
