I am so relieved to hear that I am not the only one having to deal with this terrible condition. Don't take it wrong, what I mean it's a relief to know I can speak to someone who can actullay relate to what I am going through. I am a 46yr old single parent who just last week has been diagnosed with Hemiplegic Migraine. I was a completely healthy person until February 24th of this year when I first started to have stroke symptoms where my whole left side of my body would go completely numb, my left side of my face and neck would hurt and I would start slurring for words and could not keep my balance; I would constantly walk right into the walls. While hospitalized in three occassions for the past 5 months for these same symptoms I was told they were TIA'S. But all my 3 MRI'S, 1 MRA, 2 CT scans amoung all other exams would come back negative to which they would respond that I must be going through some sort of stress. Just last week I had three partial paralysis and was then diagnosed with HM. I noticed that my condition has become worse as the days go by and have not been able to deal with it well. I have always been a strong independent woman and refused to have to relay on others to help me, but now with this condition I have been blessed with wonderful co-workers of mine where they stand by me and try to help in every way they can, but there is so much they can do. The hospital neurologist has put me on Klonopin and naproxin to which I am not responding too well due to it has been upsetting my stomach and it keeps me up all night (insomnia) when it should actually be a muscle relaxer. I am doing all types of research for I have to find a good migraine specialist as per my neurologist. If anyone knows of any in south Florida, recommendations are greatly appreciated. Should I need to go out of state I sure wish he would be one of the best and worth while taking the trip.
To all of you who suffer this condition, I wish you all the best. Any new updates in regards to HM would greatly be appreciated. Please keep in touch. It feels good to not feel alone when competeing with something you have absolutely no control of.
Maria

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!
I'm sorry about your recent diagnosis, but let's see what we can do to help you out. Yes, it is important that someone with Hemiplegic Migraine (HM) be treated by a Migraine specialist. These specialsits are experts who treat Migraine disease and headache disorders and will know how best to treat you. Your neurologist may be a fine doctor, but probably doesn't have the experience needed to treat someone with HM. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists. We do have a few Migraine specialists in FL, but if you can't find one there, I would suggest you go wherever you can to be treated.
We have information on Hemiplegic Migraine in this article: Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics.
