has fioricet been recalled??????

By Linda Friday, January 04, 2008
I read somewhere (in a discussion???) that fioricet was recalled. I also heard on tv or read somewhere that there was a link between caffeine and tylenol and kidney or liver failure and that just drinking pop and taking tylenol can cause damage. Is fioricet a problem or a concern? Does anyone have an answer to this question? I will question my doctor next time I go in, but for now he has me on it every six hours and I'm pretty much taking it thinking it is safer than vicodin....????? hmmmmm......

Boy I hope it hasn't been recalled.  I've used it off and on for years with migraines and it's been very helpful.  I've been placed on it every 6 hours for a short (1 week period) many many years ago.

All drugs have problems and side effects associated with them.  I went to         www.webmd.com and looked up Fioricet and there can be problems.  As you said, you need to discuss the issues with your doctor and determine if the possible problems outweight the benefits you are getting.  And what other options there are.  Also how each of us interacts with a drug is different.

Write down all your questions and concerns.  I don't think you can have too many facts.  Do you have a friend who can go with you to the appointment?  Sometimes having a second person to help here alot of information can be helpful if there is alot of information to take in.  I've had friends tape visits so they could listen to the answers again to better digest the information since they know they couldn't remember it all hearing it the one time.

Good luck Linda.

Fioricet has not been recalled, I just checked the FDA site. Not sure what you read, but no worries.

Acetaminophen in excess amounts can damage the liver, sometimes fatally. People think of acetaminophen as safe, because it's not so irritating to the stomach as aspirin. But it has its own problems. A year or two back, there was a 16-year-old girl who took 16 Tylenol in a day, trying to deal with a severe migraine attack.

She died of liver damage about 4 days later. At one point, she told her mom,

"But it was just Tylenol."

Caffeine is often added to pain meds because it can make the pain meds work better. At one point, my doctor advised me to "take your medicine and drink a Coke." Caffeine is in Fiornal and Fioricet  and Excedrin and Anacin. There's a cousin of Fioricet called Phrenillin that doesn't contain the caffeine.

I don't take Fioricet, primarily because acetaminophen typically doesn't do any more for me than drinking a glass of water.  In fact, water might be more beneficial.  Instead, I take Fiorinal.

Like other meds we might take for our migraines, using Fioricet or Fiorinal often can lead us into Medication Overuse Headaches.  That is one of the major concerns with using it.  If you do go into MOH, you are in rebound with butalbital, acetaminophen or aspirin, and possibly caffeine.  So be careful how you use these compound meds.

That said, I don't know what I would do without the option of using Fiorinal occasionally as a rescue medication, when my triptan fails.

Linda,

Nancy is right. Fioricet has not bee discontinued.

However, I'm concerned that you said your doctor has you taking it every six hours? I hope you don't mean every day. Using Fioricet more than two or three days a week is a sure-fire way to get rebound headaches.
