had chinese last night and Please suggest any good salad dressings!

By Linda Thursday, January 24, 2008
I had chinese last night....asked for no msg....the waitress had a good grasp of English even though she was Chinese. She said the soup and eggroll had no msg but I was doubtful because I had to ask for no msg in the meal. How could they put "no msg" in an eggroll and a bowl of soup when a bowl of soup was made by the pot and an egg roll was premade ahead of time? I only ate about a third of the eggroll and stayed away from the plum sauce, and only ate the broth from the soup and left half of it. I didn't use any soy sauce or anything either. I had a little of the runs and a tiny bit of a headache, nothing major. I think there was a little msg somewhere along the way or a derivitive of it somewhere. It wasn't severe like it has been though. Maybe the eggroll had it in it. I only had a small bit of it. Only a few bites of it. I have a lingering headache today. I've found in past if I drink a LOT of water I flush my body and I feel better so I'm trying to drink a couple of large glasses of water this morning to kind of flush it out of me. besides, I go to TOPS today to get weighed and I want to get all that salt out of me before tonight! LOL Maybe last night was NOT the night to go eat chinese. LOL I don't feel as bloated though, with no soy sauce or plum sauce, and no msg! Maybe I won't have as much of the day after bloat! I hope!!!! I shouldn't gain too much in water from it, I should still lose. I've been really good all week long. I think sticking to a healthy diet has helped my headache all week too. I've been eating a lot off salads and veggies. I'm getting po'd about all the salad dressings having msg though. Can anyone suggest any good salad dressings?????
I just read a post about chlorine and migraines.....

Linda,

I would find a local health food store and tell them what you are looking for and ask for their help.  The dressing will probably be more expensive, but I find in general salad dressing lasts quite a while and if you're not getting migraines and using all the medications, it would be worth the extra expense!!  You can also get the flavors you like.  The health food stores around me always seem to have very helpful and knowledgable people.

Good luck.

I rarely use bottled salad dressing. I make an oil and vinegar concoction using herb vinegar, dijon mustard, lemon juice, garlic and extra-virgin olive oil. I used to add a bit of seasoned salt, but we've gone low-salt around here, and I can leave that out without ruining the dressing. I toss the salad with it rather than just pouring it over.

It sounds like you're losing weight! So am I. Have you tried just a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice? It doesn't do it for me all the time, but it's a great no-calorie change of pace. I"ve discovered that just plain lettuce tastes pretty good.

There are lots of recipes for salad dressing out there. Try substituting plain non-fat yogurt for the mayo in the recipes. No fat, and no MSG. Of course, yogurt might be a trigger for you.

Newman's Own salad dressing. So I looked up the sight for you. And they had a FAQ about food sensitivities. And on the link they have a fun little chart about which dressings have msg and which don't. If you scroll down they also have this for other products as well.

HERE is the link to the Allergen Review chart.

Good luck with your meeting tonight!

what about sulfites? Is that something I should watch out for as well as msg? I haven't been watching for that one. I KNOW msg makes me get sick. I see a definite link between msg and the runs, headaches and sneezing and wheezing. Has anyone noticed a link between allergies and migraines and sulfites? I noticed the sulfites listed on that list at newmans own on the vinagrette dressings.

Linda,

Have you seen this article:

Managing Migraine Trigger Foods ?

At the bottom of the article it has a link to click to download the "trigger food workbook". In that workbook, sulfites are listed as a potential trigger food.

Any salad dressing that is organic should be safe. My favorite brand is Annie's Naturals (they're also gluten-free).
