hello an introduction

By hearts41 Wednesday, August 22, 2007

I have been living with migraines for about 15 years now.  I am currently taking topamax as a preventative and Maxalt and Fiornial as an abortive.   I recently had to have home health come in for IV infusion.  That was a first for me, they gave me Decadron, benadryl and something for naseaua.   The decadron made my stomach hurt for about a week, I had muscle weakness and pain as well.  The muscle weakness and pain was pretty bad, on a scale of 1 - 10 I would say it was about 7.   I just had a check up with my nero and he said that if I need home health again he would not use Decadron due to the side effects.   I noticed that some of you spoke of DHE, I was wondering what that was?

The thing I find most frustrating is the lack of communication between the nurse and the doctor, for example when I have a problem between office visits and have to relay information between the nurse and doctor.  I spoke with doctor about this at one of my check-ups.   It did help somewhat.

Recently my nerologist put me on Doxepin for mild depression due to the migraines, he explained that the Doxepin can actually help the migraines as well.   So perhaps it will.   Since December they are not as controlled as they were, I have had them last as long as five days.

I don't have any info on the infusion treatments, but wanted to say hello and welcome you to this web community.

I'm sorry you need to be here and hope that you gain as much from this website that I have.

Good luck.

Lori,

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection!

DHE stands for dihydroergotamine. It's an ergotamine medication used as a Migraine abortive. Something else that works quite well in IV infusion for many people is simple magnesium sulfate. There are quite a few medicaitons that can be used for this type of IV infusion. You can take a look Effectiveness of IV Therapy in the Headache Clinic for Refractory Migraines at for more information.

There are several people on our forum who have had DHE infusions. If you'd like to come talk with them, there's more information about our forum below.

Thank you for creating a SharePost. (If you haven't created a SharePost by the time you read this, I hope you'll create one and tell us a bit about yourself.)
