Allodynia

dodgegirl Community Member December 12, 2012
  • Hi I'm brand new here.  I have an 11 yr. old daughter with migraines.  Runs in the family and she has missed 19 days of school this year.  She has been on Amitryptiline for 4 months and now getting burning pain all over her head.  Neuro said yesterday it is Allodynia but is prescribing more meds for the pain.  Can anybody shed light on this for me as from what I have read, it is "false pain".  Is there anything you can do for this?  She said it was so bad she wanted to go to the ER.

    Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

I am so very sorry to hear about your daughter's Migraine pain. Allodynia  is best explained when normal stimuli becomes painful. Some people find their skin hurts during a Migraine, others their hair. Allodynia can even be experienced when we do not have a Migraine attack. The American Headache Society has a great article that may be helpful called Allodynia: When Touch Hurts But Shouldn't.

Neurologists may be fine doctors, but have a hard time being experts in one area. This is because they treat so many conditions like MS, epilepsy and stroke. A Migraine specialist is just that, an expert who treats one condition - ours - Migraines and headache disorders. It may be time to have your daughter see a "true" Migraine/headache specialist now. When you get a chance, take a look at article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

      Hey Nancy,

I don't think it was Allodynia at all (my opinion)  The burning stopped when the prednisone stopped.  The weird thing is she was on the same steroid 3 months ago and had no reaction at all.  Why would this give her a reaction?  Then the Triptan Zomig sent her back to the ER (or a combination of the 2 meds together) ...

I wonder if we give her the Triptan early enough in the beginning stages if it will knock out the migraine (instead of giving it when she is in full blown stages) and making it worse, do you know?

This is very hard to deal with as you know :(  I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy...  Seeing your child sick more than she is healthy is heartbreaking to me...  I am going to call headache clinics tomorrow for referals in my area.  The list you provided did not show any unfortunately.

Do you suffer from migraines as well?

      Thx.

      Hi Kim,

Yes, Migraine abortive medications, when taken at the first sign of a Migraine

attack, work best. They were designed to stop the Migrainous process.

It is possible to have a reaction any time we take medication. Many years ago, I would get an "annual" sinus infection and took a sulfa based drug without an issue. One year after taking...

It is possible to have a reaction any time we take medication. Many years ago, I would get an "annual" sinus infection and took a sulfa based drug without an issue. One year after taking the same medication each time, after eight days, I couldn't catch my breath, was getting warm and flush all over, and generally felt horrible. So let's just say sulfa based antibiotics are off my medication list!

Yes, I have Migraine too :(.

A word on 'headache' clinics. Make sure you find a "true" Migraine specialist, you may have to travel... check for the doctor, not the name of the clinic.  What I mean by that is, make sure there is a doctor who is outstanding in treating Migraine/headache in  children, don't just depend on the clinic's reputation.

Good luck  and keep me posted

      Happy Holidays too!

      Nancy

      Thank you Nancy!

Yes, I plan on calling the big places and getting a list of referals for my area or the closest one.

      Happy Holidays to you :)
