topamax and eye problem

By ottelia Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Hello,

I am new to the forum. I started Topamax on November 25th.  I've had some side effects but nothing unmanageable.  I've had only two breakthrough migraines, which has been wonderful.  Now I have begun experiencing eye pain and pressure.  My pharmacist says he thinks I should continue on my 50 mg.  I believe he knows as much as my doctor and I don't have to pay him. I don't have insurance.  It's $100.00 just to go in for a short consult on meds. Any thoughts on the eye problem?  Thank you.

Welcome to the site!

This is a tough one. I understand the no insurance and not wanting to spend any extra $$ - but if you are experiencing increased pressure - you should check with your eye doctor. I know, it's probably nothing, but you want to be sure.

Is the pressure feeling different from the start of a migraine feeling? Is the pressure constant?

I would check with an eye doctor, just to check your pressure and be sure.

I know it probably wasn't the answer you were hoping for, but it's your sight in the and you don't want to mess with that, right!

Let us know how you make out!

Oh, and you can also ask the eye doctor, since you don't have insurance if they can give you a reduced rate since you'll be paying out yourself - most doctors are pretty accomidating in that respect.

Thank you for your post Eileen!

I will talk with my doctor and pharmacist tomorrow.  You are right - I don't want to spend money but my eyesight is too important. Thank you for your prompt advice.  I look forward to working with the forum more.  I have had migraines for fifty years ( I'm 53) and I've gone through the gamut of tests and meds but I'm always looking for the 'holy grail' - a migraine med that works!

Thank you again..

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

If you are experiencing eye pain, please, please call your doctor in the morning to report this. It shouldn't wait. In fact the FDA has this on its med watch list, http://www.fda.gov/medwatch..   This may be one potential side effect (not common, but it can happen) that can lead to permanent vision issues like glaucoma. Ocular pain, or eye pain, is one of the symptoms associated with this condition. Potential Vision Issues with Topamax

Please let us know how you make out, ok?

Thank you very much for responding, Nancy.  I will call my doctor and my pharmacist tomorrow morning.  They both need to know this info...I am titrating down tonight and not taking my nightly dose.  I am only on 50 mg so I think it will be alright.  I look forward to getting on the forum. I have suffered with migraine for fifty years (I'm 53) and have gone through many, many tests and meds but I will continue in my quest to find something that works.  Thank you again for your kind and quick response.

Ottelia,

Please let us know what your doctor says. The links Nancy gave you are very important. Even though it's rare, Topamax has caused some cases of glaucoma, and once you lose vision to glaucoma, there's no repairing the damage.

I'll look forward to talking with you on thre forum too. We have a couple of things in common right away -- Migraines and being 53!
