For Teri

By Teresa Monday, June 07, 2010

Teri,

I've got some wonderful news. I know you've read some of my writings and you've emailed me some over the years.... After almost 30 years of suffering from the morbid monsters, which only got worse 6 years ago, I have found something that seems to be working for me.

CoQ10 150 Mg's daily (My dose was a little higher but it interfered with my beta blocker a little so I had to tweak it)

Vitamin B2 400 Mg's daily

Magnesium Oxide 800 Mg's daily (I have low levels of this and I'm on a higher dose per neuro)

My last migraine was May 1st. That was the last time I took oxygen therapy, bupap, and phenegran. I have not had any prescriptions for migraine pain since that day. I started this regimen May 2, and my Dr. helped me with the CoQ10 dosage. He told me to tweak it until I found the proper mg that didn't interfere with my heart medicine. I've found that 100-150 works very well w/o any problems.

My migraines have always been mostly hormonal, and my cycle has always been a brutal time of the month with migraines, severe cramping and "heavy" cycles. Well, I'm not sure if it's the supplements but..........for the first time in YEARS I actually had a happy period!  (Does this regimen help with that too? As, this is the first time in many many years that I was comfortable with Momma Nature)

No cramping, no heaviness, and no migraines....... I am still in disbelief. I know there isn't a cure but I think I'm finally on to something that will take away the frequency, and severity of my migraines. I've also noticed more energy and I'm sleeping so much better.

I've read about this for years in my migraine books and thought... I might as well try it.........I have nothing to lose except a MIGRAINE. I have a follow up with my neurologist the end of this month and will keep you updated.

Thanks again for all your support over the years. Even when my real family & friends just dont get it, I always have support in knowing that "YOU" do and fully understand.

Congrats Teresa! This is wonderful news. Thanks for sharing Wink

How brilliant to read your news, especially as I have just finished reading about these two supplements and found your story to re-inforce what I have read.  Its so great to hear something positive and gives us all a reason to keep working on it.  Thanks again.  Teresa

I'm still so amazed! I've been pain free for over a month & it feels so wonderful. I would have never thought with the severity of mine that "anything" would work.

I knew my neurologist was going to put me back on Topamax, so I got with my family Dr. and came up with this regimen since my neuro appointment isn't until the end of the month. I had read about fever few, but I didn't want to be on something that would be hard to come off of, and I remember my neuro telling me not to take it because it could cause rebounds, and after being on it for so long you can suffer side effects coming off of it if you do it too suddenly.

I say keep it as simple as possible if it works. :-*)

Thanks for all the support you guys.... I've needed it, that's for sure. I'm trying not to get to blind sided because I know I will probably still get them, but I think the severity and frequency is going to be a lot less.

Do you take half in the morning, half in the evening or all at once?

6/21/10 11:17am

Lori,

I take half in the morning and the other half in the evening. I've found that seems to be working. In another week it will 2 months that I've been migraine free. I've had a couple of Headaches but nothing that OTC didn't help with.

For example: I will take (2) 50 mg of CoQ10 in the morning and the other 50 mg in the evening. I take (2) vit B pills in the morning and the other (2) in the evening.

I don't know which one is making my urine neon glow yellow and don't really care at this point since it's working. hahaha! I've heard that whatever you don't need your body will just flush out in your urine.

Again, I can't stress to you enough how you should get with your Dr. or Neurologist before trying this. Supplements can have side effects as well esp if you are taking prescription medicines. My CoQ10 had to be tweaked a little bit because I'm also on a beta blocker for my heart. My heart got a little jiggy last night when I laid down, so I may have to tweak it a little less on the CoQ10 still.

It has felt awesome to go to work, without worrying about working with sunglasses on or heading to the bathroom for an upchuck spell. The best part has been no pain, and not taking prescriptions. I hate taking all that medicine and being in zombie land while still in pain.

I know I am just so HAPPY with what is working for me right now. It's been an amazing 7 weeks!

I had seriously given up hope before trying this..... my emotions are in tack and being migraine free for this long has just been amazing!!!!

Is it B2 that you're taking? I take it, and it does cause the uring to be "neon yellow."

My cardiologist was going to start me on CoQ10, but I was already taking it for my Migraines. I take it all in one dose. It's easier for me to remember and it's less expensive.

Glad you're making progress!

Hi Teri,

Yes, I am on the Vit B, COQ10 and Magnesium therapy. I didn't know if it was the COQ10 or Vit B that was making it yellow, but WOW.... If I ever get lost in the dark all I'll have to do is pee my way back home... hahahahah! I beleive it would glow in the dark!!!! LOL

Luckily I don't take anything but generic celexa but I'll talk with my Dr on the next visit. Mine are hormonal migraines so for years as long as I avoided triggers only suffered 4-5 a month. Now, perimenopause has reared it's ugly head so migraines are all wacky. After a 10 days of daily migraines, nothing for 2 weeks leaving me wondering if they are lulling me into a false sense of security. Thanks for the information.

Teresa,

I realize your post is from June, but I just had to add my congratulations to you for your success in finding a preventive regime that is working for you! I hope you are continuing to have a good results now that it is a couple of months down the road. Can you let us know how it is going?

You bring up the question of whether these supplements are good for menstrual migraine and other symptoms too, citing your having had a "happy period" for the first time in many years. I'd like to add that I've found very positive results for my many menstrual woes using a very similar regime. I currently take 150mg CoQ10, 750mg Magnesium (aspertate, citrate, oxide and taurinate) and 100mg B6 rather than B2 (I've tried both and B6 works better for me for some reason) along with Calcium, Vitamin D, Omega 3 and, finally, natural hormone replacement, since I'm now peri-menopausal on top of everything else!

Anyway, I'm glad to hear your doctor was so helpful in working out the dosages with you, and I only wish more doctors would encourage migraineurs to try these supplements before diving straight into the heavy duty prescription preventives.

Here's to continued good health!

Hi Melanie,

Well, it was working really well but the last 8 weeks I've noticed I've had more migraines, and more frequent. The severity is not quite as morbid as they used to be & that's a plus.

May- I didn't have any migraines.

In June- I had 3 bad headaches and I took a low grade migraine the 24th. On all occasions I did take my prescription pill, to avoid them manifesting into something worse. So, for the month of June I took 4 bupaps total, and 2 phenegrans.

July- was a good month until the 24th when I started. Took a migraine that day (Saturday) and it lasted until (Sunday) evening. Then the FOLLOWING weekend I had a migraine on the 30th and 31st. Again, 4 RX pills and 2 phenegrans for that month. The migraines hurt but I have a very high tolerance to pain so I was still able to function but I was in pain, nausuated and they hurt.

This month has been the worse so far. I felt a MORBID migraine coming on the 4th (Wed) and my scalp & eyes were tingling. I could feel my heart beating against my head and could even take my pulse just by feeling the beats. I immediately took my rescue medicine and that calmed things down significantly. My uncle passed away this month and I took a migraine on Friday the 13th @ work before flying to Ohio. Also got my period that day as well. (There's a pattern here.) I kept it most of the day and the following day. Not a bad one but just enough to aggravate and mess my day up. On Sunday 15th, I woke up with my head SMASHING. I don't even know how I cried with that one but I did and the more I cried the more the beats in my head were intensified. I took my meds again and flew home that day. Not a good feeling at all to be in the airport, and on an airplane at 30-35 thousand feet. I got home and just collapsed. I was worn out from the migraine, medicine, flying and just totally exhausted. So far this month, I've taken 4 Bupaps and I think 2 or 3 phenegrans. I have to admit there are days that I've ran out of my B2 and or CoQ10 and I've skipped some. That could get the issue or sometimes I just forget.

My Magnesium Oxide is 800 mg's a day (neurologist recommended) Vit B 300 mg's, CoQ10 150 mg's, Vit D and Calcium.

All and all- 4 Rx pills per month isn't a bad number for me to be taking. I'd like to take less or none at all for that matter and I don't even like taking medicine. That was a lot of my problem in the past. I would try to ride those migraines out with OTC, natural remedy or nothing at all just hoping they'd go away. Now, I've learnt my lesson and take them as soon as my head starts to hurt. I still log all of mine with dates, times, and events. I have a follow up appointment with my neurologist the 30th of October. I'm going to start taking my supplements daily, and not forget even for one day and if things are still like this by next month, I'm going to ask to be put on a preventative.

As far as my menstrual cycle, May, June and July were all good. Not heavy, light cramping and very tolerable. This month it was a little more vicious but I do think the supplements are helping with my punctuation and I'm grateful for that.

I hope you're having MUCH success with yours & Thanks for the reply. J
