What Happens in Here

By Ann Silverthorn Thursday, February 18, 2010

Yesterday--
I saw the electric blue spot
and dreamed
about the icy steel monster
that chews
behind my eye, ear, nose
and wraps
its razorous tail
round the nape of my neck.

Today--
I'm caged behind thick steel doors,
where
in silence, everything is much
too loud
where
in darkness, everything is much
too bright.

Where--
a muscle twitch
creates a dark tornado.
High voltage,
it jerks and twists my body
as the dark bile escapes.

You--
can't take my place.
Time passes. A day is gone.
Though you think I'm asleep,
inside here I'm very busy.

Each breath--
blasts me with sound.
A task--
to work my lungs.
I might forget to breathe.

Leave me be,
but please don't leave me.

Listen--
when I try to pry open
with the tips of my fingers
six-inch thick doors
to whisper-
in little puffs
how you can help me.

Give me--
something to black me out.
Lead me--
to nothingness
--till this passes.
Shut down my mind
--till this passes.
It has to pass.
I have so much to do.

this poem is a perfect all round example of what is happening in the mind at the time of a Heightened attack.  Excellent interpretation and beautifully expressed.
