Topamax weening

By Jewels333 Monday, August 06, 2012
I am going to start weening from 300 mg daily to 250 mg a week then drop 50 each week. Saw neuologist today and forgot to ask and she said I needed to DETOX from all my Meds especially the topamax because of the side effects I had. I would hallucinate for 10-15 mins every morning! That is not cool at 39 years old. I used to be sharp as a tack! Now I can't articulate words! This is evil stuff. And the only weight u lose is a few pounds from a different med they had you on! I can't wait to be pill free. If I get a headache the me and the doc will have to discuss an as needed drug. Just like for my panic attacks! So done with pharmaceuticals!and ps I am never going through a "detox" again. Aka cold turkey ! You will meet Satan my friends and stare him in the face! It's no fun and I never want to go back so if you learn anything from my babble... Don't go cold turkey!!! Thx for listening :)

I saw your post. I am so sorry that happened to you. I never got to a high dose of Topamax. I had burning feet sensation at 50 mg. and once had what felt like an "out of body" experience at Kohl's. In the dressing room! I was afraid to drive after that. The drug I had my blackest moments weaning off of though was Ativan. It's supposed to help anxiety. My doctor didn't think that I needed to wean off of it because it was not a high dose -- I think .5 mg. But I felt like I fell into this deep dark hole in my mind. Things were fuzzy and my stomach felt like it was acidic and I didn't want to eat and ate very little.

I remember going home to visit my parents to get away and recuperate there, and the first thing I could eat without trouble was scrambled eggs. I remember lying in bed one night, feeling like there was this dark force all around me that I had to fight against. I'm a Christian, and I know that the name of Jesus is powerful, so I prayed throughout the night and felt like I was literally putting on the full armor of God in my mind. Toughest experience ever. I will NOT be taking that med for anxiety or any like it in future. Scary! And I went home feeling much better. It was over.

That said, some people do great on these meds; nothing like that happens to them. My sister took Topamax, but had the burning feet sensation, and weaned with no problems. My husband took Zoloft for a while and weaned off. No problem. My grandmother had to wean off her MAOIs before every surgery -- again, no problem. Me? Not so much. All SSRIs, an SNRI, anti-anxiety meds are difficult for me to take and also wean off of.

But I do know what it feels like when you have so many different medications you're taking and you don't know which one then is causing this side effect or that one. I've got that problem now. Trying now to wean off a tricyclic antidepressant that I couldn't tolerate at higher doses therapeutic for migraine prevention and have to go very, very slowly.

So big (((((hug))))) from me here in Dayton. I understand and hope you find someone who can help you and that you are feeling better soon!

Thx for your support I'm just scared and I figure by oct I should be free. I'm tired of walking into things and saying stuff that's wrong and the cloudliness...! Glad school is starting so my kids do see me like this. The "trails " in the morning are outta control! This morning I walked into the door misjudged that by 2 feet and saw bright yellow and white light trails! Horrible! But yeah for modern medicine right? Sarcasm ! Thanks for ur reply again oh the numbness and tingles , oh annoying!!!! Soon I'll be free!

Hello, and welcome to HealthCentral's Migraine Community!

I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to get in touch with you. My aunt who was my godmother passed away kind of suddenly last week and it was a very, very long week. Anyway, enough about me, let's talk about you!

I'm sorry Topamax is not working out for you. Some people have great results with it while others not so much. Tapering off Topamax is a must, but needs to be done slowly. Dr. Silberstein, who you will read about in the article below, advises to reverse the taper schedule. Let me give you that information on Topamax: Dosage and Tapering Topamax for Migraine Prevention.
