finding relief for migraine pain

By kjlhostetter Sunday, August 12, 2007
Could someone please help tell me how to find relief from my Migraine pain. This pain is after taking my daily dose of topamax then the 80mg max of relpax I can take daily. I usually try and lay still for 5 or 6 hours with the pain but then I need relief. Any movement, sound, light makes pain get really bad so I go to Urgent Care to find relief. They will not give me anything for the pain. They tell me pain medication causes rebound headaches. But nothing else eases the pain. They tell me to go home and sleep it off. They give me a shot of phenagren and send me home, I tell them it doesn't work because I also suffer from anxiety. They don't care and still won't help. I have gone to the ER with simular results except I am left with a very steep bill. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can find relief? Please help I can't stand dealing with the pain anymore.

What has your doctor said or done to help?

Pain medications can cause rebound if used more than two or three days a week. Unfortunately, so can triptans such as Relpax. An additional problem to rebound is that preventives are unlikely to work if we're in rebound. Take a look at Medication Overuse Headache: When the Remedy Backfires for more on this.

ERs and urgent care facilities are, unfortunately, a problem for many of us. Jerks go there "seeking drugs," and saying they have a Migraine is one way they do it. That doesn't excuse how true Migraineurs are sometimes treated, but it's a big reason why it happens.

ER and urgent care problems are one reason it's so important for us to have our own doctors who take care of us and help us find the right treatment reigmen. If your doctor isn't helping, it's time to have a talk with him or find a new doctor.

Thank you Teri for your response. I hope you were not offended by my response to your post. I hope to find help somewhere and I am sure glad that you have. May God Bless you.

It sounds like you really need to see a neurologist, especially if you have not been to one yet. What you wrote sounded exactly what I was going through until I saw my neuro. While I am still getting migraines almost every day, I found that nerve blocks help, so if you can, I recommend that you look into those. Hope this helps.

Libby, thank you for your reply. I will ask the neurologist about those nerve blocks. Thanks for your information.

do they still use those or have they changed the name? I know that pain medication like any of the morphine based type drugs really don't work and imitrex is the only thing that works for me via I.V . I have seen A anesthesiologist and he is a pain dr. also for my pain meds for my back they don't take my migraines away either tried the occipital block shots both sides that seems to take the edge of to where you can move and do most of your daily things ..that is all i can think of at this point ..

Imitrex is NOT to be used for IV administration or even for IM administration. It is for subcutaneous injection only.

It is still available. The generic is also available, sumatriptan.
