Migraines and knot next to cerv spine

By a9ng7ie Thursday, January 15, 2009

I have had Migraines off and on since twenties, but the last 4 months they had been constant. We got a dog around the same time and im seeing an allergist but i noticed a bump or knot on or next to my cerv spine right below the hair line.... every time i pop my neck the pain eases up or even goes away. I have to do this tho almost 3-4 times a day and some of the time it doesnt pop and i get a bad bad migraine. Pain med dont really work but helps. Does anyone have any ideas or what kind of doctor i would need to see? I have a 6th lower lumbar vert, i dont know if all of it is just being compressed or what or if it has anything to do with it. Thanks for your time.

I know what your talking about with the lump on your neck.  Do you see a migraine specialist?  Even your primary care physician should be able to quide you.  I was helped by seeing a Chiropractor and also by my newest preventative medication "Tizanidine" perscribed by my neorologist.  It's a muscle relaxant specifically for your neck. There is help for your pain and headaches if you keep trying.

Hello, and welcome to MyMigraineConnection.com!

You first want to discuss this issue with your primary doctor, especially since your Migraines have increased over the last four months. I'm not sure what an allergist is going to do for a "bump" on your neck. If we get more than three Migraine attacks a month, it is time to discuss a preventive plan with our doctor. There are many options available for Migraine prevention. Continue reading this article for more information: Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

Since Migraine is a genetic neurologic disease, there tends to have flare ups, which are the attacks themselves. These attacks, the Migraine, can be triggered by many things. Changes in the weather, certain foods, dehydration and certainly cervical spine problems. But, only a doctor can tell you what those cervical spinal problems are though Xray/MRI.  My cervical disc issues have triggered many Migraine attacks and causes chronic head and neck pain.

We have a patient recommended Migraine specialist list you can see HERE. It is well worth the visit and many of our members here travel well over eight hours to see their specialists!

Hi Angie,

I never knew that arthritis in the upper neck joints could trigger migraines, but I certainly found that out recently. I had been having tension headaches and burning sensation on the left back of my head and my neurologist treated me for occipital neuralgia (occipital nerve runs from base of skull to forehead) for a year before I was referred to a pain specialist who diagnosed me with cervical facet disease (arthritis in upper joints of neck). The arthritis triggers severe migraines and burning sensation in back of head and neck. I was sent for physical therapy for 6 weeks and have to do the exercises at home for the rest of my life but I have not had a migraine in 5 weeks. Good luck to you.
