What sort of side effects do you have from meds?

By catfanlover Saturday, May 19, 2007
I was hoping to find out if anyone has had some strange side effects from taking Topomax, Verapamil, or Duradrin(Midrin), if so could you please share with me what happened to you. With the topomax I had some very strange psychotic episodes and this morning had the same with the Verapamil and Duradrin combination, however I did take a darvocet last night in addition to my migraine meds. The Verapamil is for preventing the migraines and the Duradrin is what I take if i'm getting one.

Your question would be great to ask on the forum, but more importantly it is vital to talk to your doctor about any unusal side effects you may be experiencing. I would encourage you to call your doctor with these new ymptoms. Something else to keep in mind is that the side effects listed are potential side effects meaning they may not happen to everyone all the time.

Catfanlover,

I have had some strange side effects to Verapamil and Midrin. I continue to take the Midrin when I need it even though I have sometimes experienced a tingling sensation through my hair. Also, with Verapamil, I became very dizzy on this medication. I have since stopped taking it. That was a while that I had that experience. I don't know how strange those are, but thought I would share with you!

Thanks for responding. I haven't really had any bad effects from those two yet. However, Topomax ruined about 3 weeks of my life at least. Let's just say I will never take it again. Thanks again

I tried the topomax for my headaches a couple months ago but stopped because I was always getting this numb tingly feeling in my hands and feet.  I was also really tired and sometimes would experience mild anxiety.  I was also taking midrin which is probably why I was so tired.  I hope this helps.  I asked the doctor and checked online about the tingling; a little tingle is supposed to be a normal side effect for the first few weeks.  I didn't like it.  Still searching for a solution for my headaches.  take care.

Hi there,

I too experienced some horrible side effects to  Topamax.  Let's just say if it could happen, it happened to me.  A short list includes:

--NO appetite, and by this I mean I was actually repulsed by food (this coming from someone who can usually eat, even when not hungry). Though I appreciated the weight loss, it scared me and everyone around me how fast it was happening

--Extreme paranoia--for example, I constantly thought co-workers were talking about me. Which led to:

--Anxiety attacks, crying, shortness of breath, the works

--Horrible crazy dreams

--Horrible temper, lashing out for no reason (if somebody's cell phone rang, I wanted to shove it down their throat; if someone was clicking a pen in my office, I wanted to beat my head against the wall

--Very depressed all the time

I really could go on, but you get the picture.  After about a month of this, I finally had the good sense to take myself off of the stuff. My doctor said I'd had the worst reaction to Topamax he'd ever seen, but since then I have heard numerous people give similar accounts.  The bad thing is, in my psychotic state of mind I really didn't think the medicine was to blame.  When people suggested the possibility to me, I would get really angry and think they were just trying to find an excuse for THEIR behavior!! Meanwhile, I kept ramping up my dosage every week, trying to reach the suggested goal.  I'm sure I was a lot of fun to deal with during this time!!! If you ask me, STAY AWAY FROM IT.  Maybe it works great for some people, but from my own experience, I say it's not worth the risk.  Plus, if you decide to take yourself off of it, it is a BEAST to get out of your system.  I felt like I was on my deathbead for at least 72 hours after my last dose.

I lost a month to Topamax, and it seemed like a whole lot longer than that.  My family, co-workers, and boyfriend can all testify... they are glad to have "me" back. Hope this helped!!!
