Continual headache for 6 weeks, no help/results?

Ask the Clinician Health Pro
  • Full Question:

    I have been experiencing a continual headache now for six weeks.  I have been to three neurologists, two ENT's, and taken two trips to the ER, Vanderbilt and Baptist in Nashville. The MRI's, CT's, and Lumbar punctures have been done multiple times, and I am still receiving no results/help for my problem.  The doctors keep telling me to go see the others for help.  The headache radiates up from my neck into the back of my head, and is accompanied by one that starts above my eyes and radiates up.  These are accompanied by weakness/reduced reflexes on the left side.  Narcotic/Non-narcotic medications do not relieve it, and migraine medicines also are of no help.  The doctors have even tried steroids to alleviate it, again to no avail.  They even sent me to see a physiologist at Vanderbilt to determine if I was drug seeking, or just plain crazy, he said I wasn't.  Any suggestions or advice from you would be greatly appreciated. Misty.

    Answer:

    Dear Misty;

    It's time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It’s important to note that neurologists and ENT's aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

    If this is a form of Migraine, and you're experiencing motor weakness (as opposed to numbness or tingling), the only form of Migraine it could be is hemiplegic Migraine. You can read more in Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics. It's important to have an accurate diagnosis in order to determine the appropriate treatment and precautions to be taken. For more about this, see The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

    Good luck,
