I have taken Zomig 5mg for several years for migraine relief. I had tried Imitrex, Treximet & Inderal without any results. Recently our insurance changed and the new insurance will only provide Maxalt. I have read some scary information about Maxalt side effects and would like to know how safe it is to take & will it be as effective as Zomig. Are there any other alternatives for me. I get the migraines every month about the time of my monthly cycle. I am 53, active and healthy. Have had migraines since I was 40 years old monthly. Thanks, Linda.
The potential side effects of Zomig and Maxalt are quite similar. Those of Maxalt aren't any more or more severe. Whether it will be as effective for you as Zomig has been is something that nobody can predict. Trying it is the only way to find out.
There have been studies using Amerge (the generic is naratriptan) and Frova for Migraines triggered by the hormonal fluctuations of a woman's cycle, taking them beginning a couple of days before the beginning of the woman's period. You can read about the Frova study in Frova®: Trial for Menstrual Migraine Successful.
