    Is there anything I can do to prevent a cluster headache?  Is there anything I can do to relieve the pain while it is ongoing? Shelly.

    Full Answer:

    Dear Shelly;

    Many of the same medications that are used for Migraine prevention are also used for preventing cluster headaches? Verapamil has been used with probably more recorded success than many other medications, so it's well worth being one of the first medications you discuss with your doctor. You can find a list of other medications used for Migraine and headache prevention in Migraine preventive medications: too many options to give up!

    For treating a cluster headache in progress, some people do well with subcutaneous injections of sumatriptan (Imitrex). There has also been some research showing Zomig Nasal Spray to be effective, and quite a few people do well with inhaled oxygen. You can read more about using oxygen in Inhaled Oxygen Shown Effective for Cluster Headaches.

    Good luck,
