10/8/07 #1 - Bell's Palsy and Migraines?

Ask the Clinician Health Pro
  • Full Question:
    I am 49 and have suffered from Migraines since I was 10. Normal twice a year migraines with an aura. In 1994 I contracted Bells Palsy and have since changed my migraines to daily. I have been to 9 neurologists and 1 pain management Doctor. Mayo Clinic and Cleveland clinic declined seeing me. I get no relief because I am allergic to many pain Meds. I would like my life back but don't know whom to see or where to go. Can you make a suggestion PLEASE. Teresa.

    Dear Teresa;

    I have heard of this occurring (anecdotally) after a suspected viral infection. Although not proven as a cause, viral infections are suspected as possible causes of Bell’s palsy. Viral infections can also play a role in the onset of daily migraines. So, it’s just a suspicion. As far as what to do, one can always wonder if more aggressive therapy, perhaps of an intravenous nature, might be helpful. When you contacted the Mayo and Cleveland Clinics, did you request an appointment in their headache centers? If not, try that.
