Can Migraines Change?

By Ask the Clinician, Health Guide Saturday, January 21, 2012
Full Question: Can migraines change? I have had migraines since I was a kid. I always have a aura for about 20 min before the pain starts. I had 2 horrific migraines last week that were the worst I ever had. The pain was terrible and none of the over the counter meds would touch it. I had no aura wit...

Hi Judy,

First and foremost, I totally agree with JD and Teri's

educated, learned response to have this checked out

by a medical doctor.

If all your aspects check out fine, then I might offer

this perspective:  I too, for 40 years have had the

aura with 20 mins. to get it stopped/muted. (Midrin

had always effectively achieved this for me.)

Sometimes, I have gotten the start-up/here-it-comes

warning (aura) with seemingly no reason for it to happen.

This means I could not assess the cause - no light trigger,

no sound, no scent, no food mistakes. (I haven't had

a delicious coney hot dog, bacon, etc. for 40 years.)

And then I took a few moments, after all these years,

to revisit the "foods that trigger a migraine" list.

And I was really taken back.  There, on the list, was

'sour cream.'  "Choline in sour cream _may_ be the

reason it can be a Migraine trigger."  For me, the

sour cream in my delicious seafood salad from the

local deli _may_ have been the cause.

I realize that what I have described here did _not_

change my migraine, but rather might be an additional

trigger that I had not realized.

BUT, what I am offering for you is that if you check

out fine, then, by extension,

something as this circumstance _might_ be the cause

or a contributor to the change in the nature (aura)

of your migraine.

Hello, again.

Well, I read this thread to my husband, and he

reminded me of the _one_ time in my experience

that we feel there was a direct causal link between

a change in my usual 20 min. aura and a food that I ate.

I had a start-up migraine with aura, but the aura

lasted only 12 mins.  When it was all assessed, we

felt that the cause might have been pepper.  (Black

pepper will trigger a migraine with me, and I avoid

ingesting it when I can see it.)

But, in this situation, we were at a restaurant, eating

the soup - New England clam chowder - in which there

was no visible black pepper.  My husband inquired as to

its ingredients and found out that the soup, in fact,

had white pepper in it.

So now I inquire as to ingredients and avoid the food

if it has white pepper in it.

This is the only time that I have experienced a change

in the timing of my aura.

~ hope this helps ~
