A note from Dr. K. and Teri:
To quote Joan Rivers, "Can we talk?" We've seen an increasing number of questions come in that we can't answer, no matter how badly we want to, so we thought we'd take a few minutes here and discuss that problem with you -- frankly, and with a bit of humor.
To keep from hurting anyone's feelings we're going to inject a bit of humor and make up a fictitious question to demonstrate the problem. It's OK to giggle at this. Laughter is good medicine. While we can't give medical advice, we're safe saying that much. ;-)
Ask the Clinician questions come to us via email from an online form, so here's that fictitious question as it would look submitted via the form:
email: ** Mandatory **
question: i have pain in left foot thinking big toe, what do you think it could be?
There are three problems that prevent our answering this question. Before we tell you what they are, can you spot them? They are:
- Wrong end of the body, Jane! This is a Migraine site. Our area of expertise is Migraine and other headache disorders. This falls outside our area of expertise. Thus, we would not attempt to answer this question.
- Jane is asking for a diagnosis. The only person who can safely diagnose is a physician who has had the opportunity to review your medical history and family medical history, discuss your symptoms with you, and examine you in person. Nobody can diagnose via the Internet. We will not even take a guess. Please do not ask us to.
- Jane did not enter her email address. Although we answer questions via the Ask the Clinician column, there are times when I email someone to ask for more information before we answer their question. If I cannot email them, we cannot answer their question.
We truly want to help and answer your questions. We hope this explains a bit about what you need to enter on the submission form and why.
