I agree that you should consult a doctor about considering tizanidine(zanaflex) as a treatment option. Its a muscle relaxor, but also helps block pain signals. It also has a short biological half life so it will be out of your system quickly. This cuts down on prolonged drowsiness. You still may become drowsy during the first few hours tho, so consider taking the medication at bedtime. Taken regularly it should have better results. It can be habit forming, but I personally never had an issue with that. I honestly thought it worked so well that I quit taking it b/c I felt I was not giving the proper attention to maintaining the cause of my pain and spasms. I wasnt sure if simply blocking the pain and supressing the spasm was the right option for my overall health. But it was a good start and a welcome relief. Also consider that the spasms and pain are a warning sign from your body. Instead of treating the symptom, try finding the cause. Spinal issues, seizures, allergic reactions, infections, and other pathologies are all possibilities.
Susan,
A couple years back I started having migraines of a different type on the left side of my head. Oh gosh were they and are they painful. I still get my controlled regular migraine on the right side but the left side is different. It starts out with the spasm first. I have had the MRI like you too. The spsams are terrible. I have had the injections w/Botox and steriods. The steroids helped some but caused alot of bulk weight issues. I just know that the pain in the head hurts!!! Anyway, it is getting a little under control with an increase in meds and added new meds. Lyrica has helped.
I do use Imitrex as soon as I feel it coming on and the Phenegren for the nausea. It doesn't always help but when it does it is great! I use the injection Imitrex because it is (for me) much quicker, since I have been on Topamax, at getting rid of the worst of the pain.
