10/22/07 #3 - Occipital nerve block for daily chronic Migraines?

Ask the Clinician Health Pro
  • Full Question:
I have a 25+ year history of migraines which have developed into daily chronic migraines. I have tried most medications with good success with Imitrex. I have recently started Occipital nerve block treatment with a migraine/pain specialist. (Treatment to date has included 2 lidocaine nerve blocks to test for effectiveness. Next will be radio frequency treatment for more long-lasting relief). I have found little info re: occipital nerve block treatment of migraines on the internet. Do you have any info re: studies, success of treatment, etc? Thank-you! John.

Most of the occipital block studies published relate to cluster headache treatment, although I have successfully used these nerve block for Migraines as well many times. We also have had great success with IV lidocaine infusions to break refractory Migraine patterns (see IV Lidocaine – Effective Treatment for Refractory Migraines in the Clinic).

You can look up published information on the topic at www.pubmed.gov which gets you into the National Library of Medicine. That’s real published data from peer-previewed journals.

    Good luck with your treatment,
