Normal to have Migraines once or twice a month?

Ask the Clinician Health Guide July 11, 2012
  • Full Question:

    I just want to ask if it is normal to have a migraine once or twice a month. I always experience this every month. I need to take a medicine just to eliminate my migraine because if I did not my migraine becomes extreme.

    Thanks for answering my question in advance. More power to both of you, Anna Marie.

    Full Answer:

    Dear Anna Marie;

    It's difficult to say what's "normal," but it's certainly not unusual to have Migraines once or twice a month. One or two Migraine a month is below the number where we usually recommend preventive therapies unless your Migraines are especially severe or debilitating or last multiple days. Of course, this is something you should discuss with your own doctor, but generally, if your Migraine medication works well when you have a Migraine, and your Migraines aren't especially severe or taking you out of commission more than a couple of hours, we'd leave well enough alone unless your pattern changes.

    So, yes, in general terms, it could be considered "normal" for a Migraineur to have Migraines once or twice a month.

    Good luck,
