Three years ago I was diagnosed by clinicians at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester with Fibromyalgia, Post Herpetic Neuralgia, and Chronic Migraines. I recently became aware of a company using Marcaine to neutralize the Sphenopalatine Ganglion. The company is SPG60.com and the treatment sounds very hopeful, but I am concerned with being hurt by an unproven treatment. This would hopefully reduce my migraine and facial pain. Have you had any experience or heard any positive outcomes from this treatment type? My family is pushing me really hard to try this treatment. The just want me to get better, but I am scared and have accepted my condition. Thank you for all the great work you perform every day, Jennifer.
Dear Jennifer; They're pretty vague about their delivery system, but intranasal use of local anesthetics such as Marcaine to relieve Migraine and headache pain is not new. Doctors have been administering these anesthetics with long cotton swabs or via nose drops for many years.
One of the questions in their FAQ is, "Is it FDA approved?" Their answer is, "Yes, this item is FDA approved." I'm not sure what their basis is for this answer. Marcaine is an FDA-approved drug, but it is not approved for the treatment of Migraine or headache. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be used; it just means that it's used off-label, and I'm not sure what they're saying is FDA-approved.
You might want to consider consulting a Migraine specialist about this and other treatment possibilities. Any Migraine specialist would be familiar with this treatment as well as others, but this seems to be the only Migraine treatment offered at this particular center. I'm not familiar with any of the doctors there, but I did check, and none of them are subspecialty certified in headache medicine.
